Deaconess Alma Helena Hayes, departed this life, Thursday April 4, 2019. She was born to the late Charlie Lewis and Grace Cousins Lewis, in Henrico County, Virginia on May 8, 1923. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, James Matthew Hayes, Jr and her devoted husband, James Matthew Hayes, Sr.
She attended Coal Pit School, and Virginia Randolph High School in Henrico County, Virginia.
Alma Lewis married James Matthew Hayes, on March 12, 1939. To this union was born eight children. James Jr, Arnold, Edward, Kenneth, Eugene, Sharlene, Scott and Willnette. God blessed this union for sixty six years.
She served her community well. She was a member of the Francistown Civic Association. Hosted 4-H club meetings in her home. Maintained the uniforms for the neighborhood baseball team, the "Glen Allen Braves". She organized a clean up campaign for Francistown and Springfield Road Communities, where over five hundred junk cars were crushed and removed in the field where the current Mount Vernon Baptist Church stands today.
She was instrumental in getting Coal Pit School renovated, in which Henrico County Parks and recreation used it for summer recreation for area youth. Coal Pit was then declared a historical Landmark. Alma Hayes was employed as Recreation Directress at this site from 1956 to 1973. Also known as "The Playground".
Alma accepted Christ at an early age, and attended the Old Saint Mark Baptist Church and also Chickahominy Baptist Church, Glen Allen, Virginia. Later she joined Mount Vernon Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Directress, Choir member, Missionary President, Youth Ministry Leader, Financial Secretary for ten years, Church Clerk for thirty eight years, and Deaconess for many years.
She was a member of the Deacon and Deaconess Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, where she served as treasurer of the Deaconess Ministry. She also was a member of Tuckahoe Baptist Association of Virginia, where she served as area president of the Women's Ministry.
Deaconess Alma Hayes was a determined, unwavering, dedicated servant who loved the Lord and doing his will. She witnessed to the lost, fed and clothed untold number of people. A mother and mother figure to many.
She is survived by her seven children Arnold, Edward (Anna), Kenneth (Patricia), Eugene (Josephine), Sharlene (Vincent), Scott, and Willnette (Robert). Thirty-five grandchildren, fifty-two great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, one sister Lottie Cosby (Elvin) , brother in law Deacon Ernest Hayes, and a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
