Alma Mathis Nelson, born on July 11, 1940, in Greenwood, South Carolina, to ML and Helen Mathis, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024. Alma was the youngest of three sisters and spent her early years in Greenwood before moving to Richmond, Virginia, in the 1950s.
In Richmond, Alma attended public schools and graduated from Armstrong High School. Her dedication to helping others led her to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and began a long, impactful career at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV).
Alma's commitment to healthcare and her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish her own business, Nelson West Haven, a testament to her hard work and determination. Her business thrived, becoming a beacon of care and support in the community. She sold the business in 2018 to dedicate her time to caring for her ailing mother, a decision that underscored her deep sense of family and responsibility.
Alma's life was marked by her compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and service. Her devoted sister, Annie Williams of Baltimore, MD, celebrates her memory, along with three nephews: Melvin Bingham of Ashland, VA, Calvin Bingham of Richmond, VA, and Lee Williams Jr. of Baltimore, MD; one niece, Tina Wilson of Pikesville, MD; and numerous extended family members and friends. Among her closest and dearest friends were Delores Mills and Linda Pryor, who cherished Alma's friendship and support.
Alma's life was a testament to the power of dedication and the impact one person can have on their community. She will be remembered for her warmth, her entrepreneurial spirit, and her unwavering dedication to her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the love she shared.
In our hearts and memories, Alma M. Nelson's light will continue.
