Barbara Elaine Smithers Spurlock of Ruther Glen, formerly of Hanover County, was born December 15, 1952, to the late Esau and Lonnie Smithers. She departed this earth Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

Barbara attended Hanover County Public Schools, she received a cosmetology license from Al Trotter's Beauty School in 1993. She went on to serve as a United States Postal Service mail carrier for well over a decade.

Barbara, affectionally known as Loli to her grandchildren, was known for her love of family. She and her husband opened their home to three foster children, as she believed there was always more love to give. She was always planning a gathering or party. She loved the beach, and making her family laugh with southern wives’ tales and anecdotes. She was also known for her incredible sweet potato pie.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 33 years Alfred Spurlock Jr., son Christopher Lamont, four brothers Harry, Charlie, Melvin (Randy) and Turner Smithers; two sisters Rosilyn Smithers, Annie Chandler.

She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Darice Smithers and Shinean Shelton (Lornell); son Alfred Spurlock III, grandchildren Jerome (Sherod) Bynum, LaNyah Shelton, Ayden Spurlock and Lornell (Tre) Shelton III, three sisters Connie Cauthorne, Geraldine Chandler (Walter) and Sharon Smithers as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
