The Legacy of

Deaconess Beatrice Thornton Johnson

John 14:1-2

"Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father's house are many mansions; If it were not so,

I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."

Deaconess Beatrice (affectionately known as Sudder) Thornton Johnson, 97 years blessed, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Hospital in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends carried her through the last part of her journey. She was born to the late Walker, Sr., and Mary Thornton on February 22, 1923. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Thomas Ellis Johnson, Sr., sister, Evelyn S. Holman; brothers, Walker, Jr., and William Thornton.

Beatrice was educated in the Hanover County Public Schools and retired from Richmond Memorial Hospital after many years of service.

Beatrice accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Union Baptist Church, Ashland, Virginia. She was a dedicated member, and continued to do God's work in the church until her health declined. She served in many capacities within her church including Deaconess, Usher, Missionary and Hospitality.

Beatrice home was filled with love, nurturing and the admonition of the Lord. "Sudder" loved to work in her beautiful flower garden and working word puzzles with "Byrd". Beatrice repeated her favorite testimony everyday "Thank you God for everything…You been so good to me…God I can't thank you enough!

Beatrice's legacy continues through her faithful and loving son and daughter-in-law: Thomas Ellis Jr., and Mary Johnson, Glen Allen, Virginia; grandson, Jay C. Johnson (Robin); two great-granddaughters, Jaeaundra and Jada; god-daughter, Diandra Finney; two sisters, Lucille Henry and Louise Lewis; brother-in-law, Columbus Johnson; a very special and devoted caregiver (like a daughter), Lauretta Crawley; special friends (Barbara Benton and Saundra Jordan); and a host of very special and devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends.
