Betty Corrine
Beynum
August 28, 1937 – January 17, 2024
Betty Corrine Beynum (Holmes) was born August 28, 1937, in Caroline County to the late Barlett and Novella Holmes. She was educated in Carolina County Public Schools. At an early age she married the late Harold L. Beynum Sr. and from this union they had eight children.
She relocated with her family to Washington, DC. She worked various jobs throughout her adult life; however, she was employed for over 30 years with the District of Columbia Government, Public Schools (DCPS) while diligently raising her 8 children and grandchildren in Southwest D.C. She was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church. Betty was one of the pioneers in the creation of Greenleaf Recreation Center Southwest Block Camp. Her home was also known as a safe haven for neighborhood children. After retirement from DCPS, she moved back to Ruther Glen Virginia where she worked for Ruther Glen Public Schools for a short period of time and remained in her hometown until her passing.
Betty accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Because of this, we know she has been received into His Glory. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord 2 Cor. 5:8. She was an active member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, VA; she was a faithful member for over 70 years and served in the Chenell Choir as well as on the Usher Board.
Peacefully, on January 17, 2024, she departed this life at MedStar Medical Center in Clinton, Maryland with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold Beynum Sr., children Vanester, Clifton, Steven, Kevin, 2 grandchildren and 17 brothers and sisters, including her twin sister Nettie.
She devoted much of her time as a dedicated mother and grandmother, great grandmother and great great-grandmother she was well loved by those who knew her. Her interests included spending time with family, talking with friends, always with a loving spirit and giving of herself to help others, playing card games, listening to gospel music, journaling, crossword puzzles, and cheering on her favorite football team the Dallas Cowboys.
Betty enjoyed creating flower arrangements and making ceramics figures. Betty was proud of her ceramic; she entered her crafts in the Caroline County fair contests, where she won numerous ribbons including red ribbons. She was known for her classy style and fashion sense, claiming Louis Vuitton as her favorite brand. She was loved by many and when asked how she was doing her saying was "I'm Doing the Best I Can".
She leaves to cherish great memories and her legacy; Harold Beynum, Jr., Laverne Miller (Bernard) Anthony Beynum, Jacqueline Alston (John), 1 goddaughter, 28 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, sister-in laws Rosetta Minor and Martha Holmes, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Special friends Ms. Mary Derricotte and Ms. Gene Carpenter.
