Charles Thomas
Allen
September 20, 1938 – May 29, 2023
Charles Thomas Allen was born in Hanover County on September 20, 1938 to the late Charles Herbert and Bertha Taylor Allen. He departed this life on May 29, 2023 at Henrico Doctors' Hospital.
He was educated in the Hanover County Public Schools, attending Georgetown Elementary School from 1944-1951 and John M. Gandy High School from 1951-1955. Charles was baptized in 1949 at the Allen Pond and became a member of the (Greater) Nazarene Baptist Church, where in his youth, he served as an usher and member of the Junior Choir. After completing high school, he joined the Hill Construction Company under the apprenticeship program supervised by Reverend Elijah Hill who was his pastor at the time.
After completing the apprenticeship, Charles began a career in construction specializing in the installation of plaster and sheetrock. He was often requested for his expertise in "twirling" ceilings. He participated on a team that helped complete the interior of the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church, as well as, a later Fellowship Hall addition. Charles was a faithful member of the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church Trustees Ministry until 2021 and was affectionately known as "Chief of Security". In addition to construction, he also worked at the Union Envelope Company for a few years before becoming self-employed in 1975 by establishing the C. T. Allen Hauling Company which continued until 2017. His community activities over the years included the Georgetown Baseball Team, the Young Sportsman Hunt Club and Commonwealth Lodge 81. He could always be found helping his neighbors and friends whenever there was a need.
He married the late Emily Jean Moore on May 10, 1958, and from that union were born three children. Charles leaves to cherish his memory: Anthony M. Allen (Robnette), Cynthia A. Brandon, Kimberly A. Lee (Chappell); fourteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; three sisters, Marilyn A. Brooks, Patricia A. Bagby (Keith), Carolyn Fowlkes; two brothers-in-law, Foster Moore, Sr., George Moore;; three nieces Juanita Anderson (devoted), Cerelia Sumlin, Patrice Bagby; one nephew and godson Keith Bagby, Jr; a "Ride or Die" best friend Andrew Howard; devoted cousin Leroy Allen and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister Velma A. Jones and a son Kenneth W. Greene, Sr. He will be greatly missed by his entire family, but especially by his granddaughter, Taylor Lee, who considered him her best friend.
