Obituary

Charles J. Smithers transitioned to his heavenly home on Friday, February 9, 2024.  He was born in Dawn, Va. on January 31, 1949 to Granville and Louretta Smithers. Charles was one of 14 children. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Horace Smithers, Arlene (Addie) Tunstall, and Wortham Smithers.

He joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at an early age. Charles graduated from Union High School in Bowling Green, Va. and enlisted into the United States Army upon his graduation. He served his country and completed tours in Germany and Vietnam. Charles was a Team Leader in Company A. He was the proud recipient of the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Service Metal.

Upon his release from the military Charles returned home to marry the love of his life, Reather J. Taylor, better known as "Sis Taylor". To this union, three children were born. Charles was a proud husband, father, and grandfather. They were happily married for 30 plus years. His wife preceded him in death on December 3, 2003.

Charles loved fishing and was an avid fisherman. He loved his sports teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia 76ers. He also loved watching westerns and old Army movies.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory, three children, Adrian Baker (Dovie), Donovan and Colby Smithers (and devoted daughter-in-law, Koatina); 10 grandchildren, Damon, Adrian, Anandi, Delphine, Leesha, and Dovie Baker, Jr., Amber Rogers (Shondalyn), Bernard Ford (Niya), Ashllee Spurlock, and Justin Smithers along with a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
