Deacon Floyd
David Derricott
November 28, 1941 – February 2, 2021
With Jesus at the head of the table and a host of a heavenly multitude, Floyd David Derricott, 79 quietly accepted his final earthly call on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Henrico Doctors Hospital, Richmond, VA. Though this calling was unexpected, the Master had already prepared the table for Floyd to come and dine. Floyd was born the first son of the late Deacon David and Deaconess Frances Derricott on November 28, 1941 in Ruther Glen, Virginia.
He received his education in Caroline County at the historical Jericho School, McDuff School, and Union High School. He enjoyed a lengthy employment experience at Jarrell's Truck Plaza in his early years and later worked and retired as a tanker driver for Bradley and Willet Company.
During the early years, Floyd (nicknamed as Brother to family), worked alongside his father building the home place and working in the garden. He loved driving "Momma" to her weekly grocery store visits and Friday outings with Aunt Magdalene in his blue and white 1957 Ford. Floyd grew-up in the household with twelve siblings and shared many fond memories with all of them of whom five are deceased (Helen, Dorothy, Gladys, Ronnie and Kenneth). All his siblings affectionately loved him as he helped with their care throughout the years.
On May 11, 1964, Floyd united in holy matrimony with Lelia Armstead. Floyd and Lelia have three children, Melissa, Floyd Eugene, and Sedell Derricott. They have six grandchildren and one great granddaughter who is the sunshine of their lives. Floyd cherished his family, was a loving husband to Lelia, and took great pride in providing for and being a nurturing father to his children and grandchildren.
Floyd accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Oxford Mt. Zion Baptist Church. After rededicating his life to serving God in 1987 and many years of being anointed by the spirit and service to the Lord, God granted him discipleship as a deacon. He was ordained as a deacon and was instrumental in overseeing the planning, operation, and continued successfulness of the church. He was influential in serving on the Pulpit Committee in the selection and installation of our present Pastor, Reverend Duane T. Fields, Sr.
Deacon Derricott served as Chairman of the Deacon Ministry, a member of the Men's Fellowship Ministry, Music Ministry, musician for the Mighty Male Chorus, and guitarist for the Unity Choir. Additionally, he served as the church sextant for many years. He found great joy worshipping, serving, and studying God's word at home, Bible Study, Sunday School, and church services.
Deacon. Derricott leaves to cherish his memory, his beautiful wife of fifty-six years Lelia; three children, Melissa, Floyd Eugene, and Sedell Derricott; six grandchildren, Alana Derricott, Tory Smith, Michael Smith, Ashley Derricott, Trevan Smith, and Brandon Derricott; and one great-granddaughter Aubree Smith. Seven siblings, Evelyn Flowers of Capital Heights, Maryland, Rev. Ada Lee(Sterling) of King George, VA, Joyce Henson (Charles) of Clinton, Maryland, Frances Kirkland of Jonesboro, GA, Shirley and Faye Derricott of Washington, DC, and Linda Johnson (Van) of Ruther Glen, VA. One goddaughter, Candace Lee, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, among them his devoted friend, Rev. Isaac Johnson. When reflecting upon the wonderful life of Dea. Floyd Derricott, one can sincerely say that he is loved by many and favored by the Lord for the work he has done. Well done, our good and faithful servant! Well done!
