Wortham Olden Smithers, lovingly known as "Work" by family and friends, was called to rest with our Heavenly Father on Friday, January 26, 2024 surrounded by family. He was born on March 17, 1933 in Dawn, Virginia to the late Virnelle Smithers and raised by the late Dodson Smithers and Addie Stevens Smithers.
Wortham accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age and joined the Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Dawn, Virginia. He later became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Doswell, Virginia. As a member of Jerusalem, he faithfully served as an Usher, a Trustee, attended and taught Sunday School, sang with the Male Chorus and was a Deacon until his health began to decline.
He attended the Dawn #4 Elementary School and Union High School in Caroline County, Virginia. One of his many places of employment included the Cross Brothers Grocery Store, and he retired from Wonder Bread Bakery after 27 years of employment. Post-retirement he enjoyed being a delivery driver for Pence Auto Parts.
Wortham was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Anderson and Deliah Smithers and brothers, Manley, Granville, and William Smithers.
Wortham leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Thelma Smithers; one daughter, Velma Diane Harris; two sons Donald Smithers (Bonnie) and Vince Smithers (Cindy); grandchildren: Sedrick Anderson, Bryant Harris, Kara Withers (Robert) and Kevin Smithers;, great grandchildren, Shakira, Stephon, Shannell and Grayson; great-great grandchildren, J'Sahn and Haiti; devoted sisters-in-law, Evelyn Anderson, Marion Harris, and Garnetta Lucas; brothers-in-law, John Anderson (Gloria) and Ernest Anderson (Cleo); a devoted nephew, Calvin Smithers and a devoted niece, Joyce Taylor, and a host of other relatives and friends.
