Obituary

Deaconess Alma M. (Vessels) Roberts,  (affectionately known as Teenie), was born on August 10, 1930 in King William County, Virginia to the late Thomas and Erma Vessels. She peacefully answered her Master's call on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at her residence.

She attended King William Training School. Her culinary skills were shared with family and community and she had a passion for cooking, canning, gardening and traveling with the girls. As the matriarch of her family she instilled words of encouragement and wisdom to all.

She was joined in holy matrimony October 23, 1948 to Deacon James E. Roberts. From their union they were blessed with four daughters.

Deaconess Roberts joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church at an early age and was baptized by Rev. S.B. Holmes.  Knowing her trust in God and unwavering faith, she was ordained as Deaconess in 1971 by Rev. E.E. Moore. Possessing a true servant's heart, she faithfully served in numerous ministries - clerk, usher, missionary, choir and hospitality at Mt. Sinai and other churches.

Some of her most memorable songs were "All Night, All Day" and "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand".

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Deacon James E. Roberts; parents, Thomas and Erma Vessels; father-in-law, Gwathmey Roberts, mother-in-law, Hattie Johnson Roberts; brothers, James and Linwood Vessels; grandson, Terrence Pierce; great grandson, Terrence Brownlee.

Deaconess Roberts leaves to cherish her memory; devoted daughters, Alma J. Pierce (Lonnie), Sarah Roberts, Mary Johnson (Thomas) and Lisa Roberts; siblings, Willie Thomas Vessels (Florence) and Molly Braxton; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Vessels and Lizzie Vessels; devoted cousin Lonie Spell; (five) grandchildren, Nicolle, Altese, Lonnie, Jr., Christopher and Tyrone, Jr.; (eleven) great-grandchildren; (four) great great-grandchildren; (two) grandchildren in-love, Christiana and Cheron; niece in-love, Vera Harris; and a host of other relatives and friends.
