Doris Viola
Carter Spurlock
March 10, 1944 – April 6, 2024
Doris Viola Carter Spurlock departed this life early Saturday morning, April 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Hanover, VA, Doris was the fourth child born to the late Lewis and Maude Carter. She graduated from Union High School in Caroline County. Doris accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. J. L. Hobson. She continued to show her dedication to Christ and her church community at First Mt. Calvary Baptist with Pastor Curtis Harris, Jr. She served on the hospitality committee, was a member of the Gloria Shipman Inspirational choir, was an avid bible study scholar, and she worked diligently with the youth committee. Doris was also a long-time employee with the Commonwealth of VA at the Hanover Juvenile Center. She was later employed by the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for blind, where she retired in 2013.
Doris was united in holy matrimony to late husband Elijah Randolph Spurlock on September 17, 1977. From this union, they were blessed with three devoted children, Kim, Barry, and Dean. She was a nurturing wife and mother, the matriarch of the family. Nothing meant more to her than creating memories. On holidays, it was tradition for her to host and make sure everyone left happy, full, and with several plates to go. But make sure you leave enough leftovers for Barry and Dean. She loved cooking and some of her family favorites were her rice pudding, potato salad, and amazing butter rolls made from scratch. With her great sense of style, Doris took pride in making sure her family dressed to impress, from tailored suits for her husband down to the most fashionable clothing for her great-grand children. And of course, she always showed up strutting her stuff in the most stylish outfits and accessories. She also loved decorating, fishing, traveling and watching her soap operas, tennis, and westerns. In recent years, Doris enjoyed daily visits from her sons and tropical cruises and bingo with her daughter and son-in-law, as they all fulfilled their promise to take care of her.
Doris was proceeded in death by her husband Elijah Spurlock, sisters Edith Armstead, Patsy Robinson (Alphonso), Helen Smithers (Manley) and brother Herman Lee Carter. She leaves to cherish her memory, children; Kim Jackson (Dave), Barry Spurlock (Marchelle), Dean Spurlock (Carlessia), Wendy James (Ronald), and Karen Archer; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers; Earl Carter, James (Jimmy) Carter (Eva) and Robert Carter (Christine); 2 sisters, Eunice Jackson and Peggy Armstead; uncle Curtis Harris, Sr. bonus children and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
