Obituary

On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, God sent His loving angels to peacefully escort the soul of Dorothy Mae Tolliver to her heavenly home. She answered her Master's call with grace and completed her journey to her final resting place.

Dorothy's earthly journey began on August 15, 1932, when she was born to the late Rosa Mines Toliver in Richmond, Virginia. She received her education in the Caroline County School System.

At an early age, Dorothy joined Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. She truly loved the Lord and devoted her life to serving Him through her work in the church. Over the years, she actively served on the Usher's Ministry, Little Light Society, and diligently served on the Hospitality Committee. Dorothy was also a devoted member of the Virginia State Grand Chapter, Eastern Star Scottish Rite, where she served faithfully until she became the primary caregiver for her beloved daughter, Angela.

Dorothy was employed by numerous companies throughout her lifetime, including Double B's Restaurant and Holly Farms/Tyson Foods, where she dedicated more than 30 years before retiring. During her retirement, she also worked for Kings Dominion and Randolph-Macon College.

Dorothy was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and dear friend. She was well known for her delicious potato salad, sweet potato pie, macaroni and cheese with stewed tomatoes, and her famous apple dumplings. Dorothy's kitchen was a place of warmth and welcome—no one ever left hungry or as a stranger. She found joy in feeding others and had a wonderful sense of humor that kept everyone around her smiling. Dorothy's compassion and love for her family and friends were evident in everything she did. To know her, was to love her. Family and friends were blessed to have celebrated her 93rd birthday with her in August.

She was preceded in death by her brother James "Junior" Toliver, her daughter, Angela Toliver; her granddaughter, Randi Garnett; and her grandson, Brandon Toliver.

She leaves to cherish her memory two loving daughters, Joann Toliver and Deda Garnett (Leon); one granddaughter, Kira Toliver; three great-grandchildren, Brya Johnson, Dameon Terrell, and Chardonnay Terrell; two nieces, Viola Toliver and Sandra Morris (Quincy); and one nephew, Shawn Battle.

Her life and memory will also be treasured by her devoted sisters/brother/cousins, Eunice Smithers, Cheryl Alsop (Teddy), Sarah Seabrooks, Alvin Smithers (Donna), and her loving and dedicated caregiver, Shanice Smithers.

Dorothy's circle of love extended to many devoted cousins and friends, including Eloise Green, Felicia Smithers, Florence Johnson, Virginia Woodfin, Edward Cooper, Lilly Waller, Anna "Baby Sis" and Andre Stevens; Mary Ann Smithers, and Shirley Smithers; along with a host of other relatives and friends. Dorothy will be truly missed by all who knew her.
