Douglas Lewis
Burruss
June 1, 1951 – July 19, 2024
Douglas Lewis Burruss, lovingly known as "Doug" or "Douglas" by family and friends, "Uncle Doug" or "Uncle Douglas" by his nieces and nephews, was called to eternal rest by our Heavenly Father on Friday, July 19, 2024.
Born on Friday, June 1, 1951 in (Ashland) Hanover County, VA, he was the third of three boys born to the late Deacon Charles Henry Burruss, Sr. and Gracie Rebecca Bray Burruss. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Robert Lee Burruss, Sr., his nephews, Timothy and Ronald Burruss; grandparents, Louis and Queen Napper Burruss, Carter and Eugenia Bray; sisters-in-law, Marguerite and Shirley Burruss.
Douglas accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Ashland, VA under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas J. King. He served faithfully as an usher for many years. He enjoyed church so much that he often visited local services in Ashland and in Mechanicsville. He would come in, sit down for 15 minutes and then leave.
He attended John M. Gandy School in Hanover County, VA. Douglas' penmanship was beautiful and meticulous. He would sometimes sign his middle name L-E-W-I-S or L-O-U-I-S. Sometimes confusing folks because he was named after his paternal uncle Douglas Louis Burruss. Douglas was a happy-go-lucky person who enjoyed life and along with his big heart would flash a big smile. He loved riding his bike or walking around the town of which he was known for.
In the early days, he was known to show up anywhere and in a moment's notice disappear. He was a carefree, calm and quiet person. An avid sports fan of basketball and baseball and loved animals. If you ever asked him what he wanted to eat he would simply say "ham-bur-ger" or ham" with an orange soda or milk and cookies.
Douglas worked with his father who had a trash and toilet business in his early years. He later worked alongside his brother Robert, who owned and operated Burruss Trash Service, Inc. for many years. Douglas was also employed by Harris Disposal Service in Hanover VA under McKinley Harris.
Over time, unable to live independently, Douglas resided in the home of his brother Robert and family. It was there, a new chapter of his life, that he witnessed and experienced the atmosphere of being surrounded, loved and cared for by his family.
Douglas leaves behind to treasure his memory his brother, Charles H. Burruss, Jr. (Mary), a very devoted sister-in-law Deaconess Mary Q. Burruss; five devoted nieces: Rev. Tonia Burruss, Min. Julie Jackson (Ronald), Deaconess Lisa Shelton (Michael), Courtnee and Regina Burruss; two devoted nephews: Charles Burruss, III (Robyn), and Robert Burruss, Jr., Bonus niece, Joyce Johnson; four great-nieces: Raquita Jackson (Mimi), Dominique Maddux-Jackson, Ranique Jackson, Noree and Leeya Burruss, Maliyah Gordon; Six great-nephews: Charles Price, Jeffery, Jaysten and Just Wright, Marquese and Mahki Wiley; two great-great nieces: Saniya Price and Meichelle Williams; and great-great nephew, Freddie Price, along with many cousins, devoted, Cora Daniel, other relatives and friends.
