Obituary

Edith Lee Shelton was a great woman of God who lived her life with love, dignity, humility, and unwavering faith in God. She was a devoted wife, loving and caring mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.

The daughter of the late Nettie Coleman, she was the youngest of three children. Both Fannie Coleman and Thomas Coleman preceded her in death.

Edith was educated in the Hanover County Public School System.

In 1950, Edith was united in holy matrimony to Clyde B. Shelton, Sr. Clyde, Sr. and their youngest daughter, Bertha M. Shelton, and grandson Terrence Shelton preceded her in death.

At an early age, she surrendered her life to Christ and was baptized by the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Beaverdam, VA. She later joined the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church to worship with her husband. Her desired scripture was Matthew 6: 9-13 "The Lord's Prayer", while her favorite songs were "Precious Lord Take My Hand", "Pass Me Not", and "Shake Yourself Loose", by Vicki Winans.

Edith's passion was cooking. She started cooking at the age of 7 when her aunt Deborah Long brought her a baking set. One morning her mother forgot to make the dough for bread before she went to work. That's when Edith decided to make it and by the time her mother got home, the bread was ready to eat. She could fix anything. She never used a recipe or measured anything. If you asked her how to fix something, she would say "a little bit of this", "a pinch of that", and "fix it to taste" (we still don't know what that means). Additionally, she loved working 1000 pieces jig saw puzzles until her great-grandson Jerquan took his hand and knocked half of the puzzles on the floor and she said, "that's it for puzzles".

Edith's legacy lives through her surviving children Rev. Margaret Henry, Clyde B. Shelton, Jr., and Patricia Wise (Charlie); five grandchildren Patricia Ware (devoted), Tama Jackson, Shelia Shelton (Signay), and Keith Shelton (Renarda); five honorary grandchildren Tiesha Pleasants, Monique Scott-Pleasant, Schmere Scott, Schvoni Scott, and Amber Young; 14 great-grandchildren devoted Andre Shelton, Jerquan Tyler and Zhane Jones, and 12 great great-grandchildren. In addition, she had numerous loving and caring nieces, nephews, cousins and friend (devoted Betty Tyler, Roderick James, Earl James, Deloris Tyler, Goldie Goldie DeBorous, Velma Shelton and Stacey Shelton.
