Emmitt Ashby
Mines, Jr.
September 9, 1934 – December 5, 2022
Deacon Emmitt Ashby Mines, Jr., lovingly known to as "Jig" or "Mr. E" by family and friends, "Pops" by his children and "Big Poppa" by his grandchildren, was called to eternal rest with our Heavenly Father on Monday, December 5, 2022.
Born on September 9, 1934, in Hanover County, VA. He was the fourth of twelve children born to the late Emmitt Ashby Mines, Sr. and Ida Burrell Mines. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 24 years, Ollie M. Jackson Mines; son, Ollie L. Jackson; six brothers, George Burrell, Curtis Chamberlain, John, Rufus, William, and Percy Mines; and sister, Catherine Robinson.
Emmitt Mines accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Beaverdam under the pastorage of Rev. E. E. Robinson. He attended school in Hanover County, VA. Upon leaving school Emmitt joined the U. S. Army. A Korean War veteran, he served two tours, one in combat and one as a Military Police, and received an honorable discharge in 1958. Upon discharge he had various careers including working with the Hanover County Sherriff's Department training program, as a Security Guard, a Brick Mason, a Forklift Operator and eventually, upon semi-retirement, continued working at Hardee's Restaurants, LLC, until age 85.
In 1970, Emmitt married Ollie M. Jackson. After marriage he moved his membership to the St. James Baptist Church, Beaverdam, VA. After 24 years of marriage Ollie departed this earthly plane in 1994. He was a family man with a loving heart. Emmitt was a dedicated Usher at St. James and as his relationship with his Spiritual Father grew, he was later ordained as a Deacon. He served faithfully on the Deacon Board at St. James and in supporting the Deacon Conference of Hanover County. He also served as the Assistant Sunday School Superintendent. You could often find him home on Saturday night sitting at the kitchen table with Brenda Gatling preparing for the Sunday School lesson. He enjoyed church so much he often left services at St. James and would then attend services at Mt. Carmel.
Emmitt enjoyed life and along with his big heart he would flash a big smile. He loved talking with friends and family and was an avid sports fan. He often spoke of having enough brothers that they would form their own baseball team. He also loved watching football where the Washington Commanders were his favorite team and, in his opinion, the greatest team. He enjoyed the camaraderie and competition he shared with De (who he affectionately named "Charlie B") when they watched football together especially when the Washington Commanders played the Dallas Cowboys.
Emmitt leaves behind to cherish his memory his sons, Ronald James, Sr., Dean Jackson, Ronald Jackson, and his devoted daughter, Ursula Mines; one daughter-in-law, Julie (Burruss) Jackson; grandchildren, De Hullaby (devoted), Ronald James, Jr., Khia James, Kyle James, Maurice Heath, Shavon Wood, Raquita Jackson, Dominique Maddux-Jackson, Ranique Jackson, Antonio Hunter, Tiron Straus, Dena' Straus, and Deon Grimes; Fourteen great-grandchildren; his siblings, James 'Skeezy" Mines, Joseph "Bike" Mines, Ruth "Sister" Braxton and Ida "Nomo" Anderson; three sisters-in-law, Mary Mines, Clarice Mines and Cuetta Jackson; his faithful companion, Brenda Gatling; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
