Francenia Toliver

Deaconess Francenia Toliver Tyler departed this life peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, January 17, 2021, at Henrico Doctors Hospital. She was born on January 22, 1936, in Ashland, Virginia to the late Rosa Lee Henry and Robert O. Toliver Sr. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Horace, Leslie, Robert Jr., Raymond, Broaddus, Nelson Toliver, Deaconess Shirley Johnson, and Reverend Nellie Bea Winston. She attended Hanover County Public Schools in Ashland, VA. She made a lifelong career of Domestic Services in Ashland and Richmond, VA for over 50 years and during this tenure she remained close friends with the Boyajian, Martirosian and Garner families. Dr. Martirosian cared for Francenia as a sister and treated her as such, ensuring that she received the utmost care and comfort in her final weeks.
Francenia was joined in holy matrimony to Charles R. Tyler on January 26, 1963, and relocated from the Jamestown community to the Brown Grove community in Ashland, VA. She was adopted into the community and was loved and befriended by many. She was one of the founders and longtime member of the well-known Social Club the Jollettes of Brown Grove.
Francenia was loved by her immediate family and was known to them all as 'momma, mom and grandma'. She was a strong disciplinarian and led by example to always treat others as you would like to be treated by doing what's right. She was direct and always told the unbiased truth, which was one of the qualities people loved most about her. She was a notable cook and had several favorite dishes, one being the sought after 'Holiday Walnut Cake' which was made with her secret recipe.
Francenia had a special place in her heart for her extended family from the Toliver, Taliaferro and Henry families, locally in Ashland, Richmond and Charlottesville VA, as well as Florence, NJ and Philadelphia, PA, she always would proudly refer to them as her 'Cuzins'.
Francenia was a faithful and active member of the Brown Grove Baptist Church, Ashland, VA. She was a several ministries over the years, including Pastors Aide, Hospitality, Senior, and Missionary and was currently the acting President of the Deaconess Ministry.
Francenia lived life to the fullest and took on many opportunities to explore and travel. She and Charles got the opportunity to travel to many popular tourist locations for vacation here in the United States and abroad. A few of their excursions were, Chicago, Bermuda, Honolulu, HI, New Orleans, Memphis TN, Mackinaw Island, MI, Orlando, FL, Bahama Islands, Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands, Canada and many more.
Francenia leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted and caring husband of 57 years, Charles R. Tyler; three daughters, Shirletta (Harold), Tonya (Barney), Melinda (Kenny); Two sons, Alfred (Jean) and James; eight grandchildren, Carla (Dexter), Brandon, Darek (Ashley), Alisha (Jarad), Brittney, Tyler, Gavin, Kenny, Jr.; Three great grandchildren, Aliyah, Carter, and Emery ; Three sister in-laws, Alfleda, Mary and Shirley Toliver; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Devoted Friends, Edith Coleman, Carmelia Minor, faithful cousin Daisy Peterson, the Brown Grove Community and Church Family and three God sent young ladies she cherished as her daughters: Latresa Winston, Angela Spurlock and Millie Coleman.
