George Lee Brooks III

George Lee Brooks III, of Caroline County, Virginia, was born on January 17, 1953, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late George and Rosa Lee Brooks. As the youngest of four children, he was affectionately known as “Lil’ George” by his parents, close relatives and friends.

George graduated from Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia, with the Class of 1970, and later attended Norfolk State University. During his school years he developed a passion for football, a sport he greatly enjoyed playing.

Brother George was a faithful member and former Exalted Ruler of Williams Lodge #11-B, better known as the Elks Lodge. He made history as the youngest member ever selected to serve in that distinguished role. He was also a lifelong faithful member of Commonwealth 81 and Love & Union Hall where he served as a trustee for 20 years.

George began his career with VEPCO (now Dominion Energy) in the mailroom. He entered the company’s apprenticeship program, becoming one of the first African Americans to successfully complete the program as an electrician. He later retired as a Maintenance Mechanic after more than 30 years of dedicated service.

George never met a stranger and loved to talk. He genuinely enjoyed connecting with people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether solving electrical issues, repairing heating and air conditioning systems or offering sound advice, George found joy in serving others.

George accepted Christ at an early age at Third Street Bethel AME. He later became a member of Mangohick Baptist Church where he served in several ministries including the Trustee Ministry, the Usher Board, and the Men’s Chorus.

In 1980, George married the love of his life Dolores Taylor Spurlock. Together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and hard work. One of George’s greatest accomplishments was transforming their first home, originally built in 1795. From replacing lath and plaster with drywall to modernizing the electrical system, adding a garage and installing vinyl siding, he poured his craftsmanship and love into creating a beautiful home for his family. Their union was blessed with one beloved daughter, Dominique Nicole Brooks.

On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, God called George home to eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his parents Rosa Lee and George Brooks Jr.; nephews James C. “J.C.” Brooks and William R. Gordon Jr.

George leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 45 years, Dolores Spurlock Brooks; daughter Dominique Nicole Brooks and her husband Marcus D. Barbour Ingram; his treasured grandchildren: Marcus D. Barbour Ingram Jr. and Gabrielle Barbour Ingram.

He is also survived by his Sisters: Mary Francis and Georgia Ann Gordon (William); his Brother: Harry “Pep” Brooks (Edith); his Aunts: Rosa “Aunt Bet” McGill, Winnie Mae Cooper and Ruther Mae Cooper; his Sister-in-law Barbara Spurlock; his Devoted Brother-in-law Douglas Spurlock and his Devoted Sister-in-law Rosa Brooks (Douglas); nieces and nephews: Una Francis, Melissa Farrington (Larry), James Francis (Yolanda), Darice Smithers, Mark Francis, Alfred Brooks Jr. (Angel), Shinean Shelton (Lornell), and Alfred Spurlock III; his Devoted friends Jerome Payne, Carl Twisdale, and Devoted cousins Lee Gordon, Randolph Cooper, and Rometa Austin; along with a host of extended family members, church family, neighbors, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

George’s legacy is one of faith, humility, service, craftsmanship, and unconditional love. He lived with integrity, gave generously of himself, and left an enduring impact on everyone blessed to know him. His life stands as a testament to the Scripture he lived by: whatever he did, he did wholeheartedly, as unto the Lord.
