Obituary

Missionary Gloria S. Johnson departed this life on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Hospital. Gloria was born on June 18, 1955, to the late Frank Straus and Mary B. Braxton.

From the age of three she was raised by the late Clarence and Susie Anderson. She was preceded in death by her brothers James and Charles Braxton, foster sisters: Audrey Green (Richard), Marian Williams (Lewis) and Ruth Smith (Richard), foster brother Leon Anderson, two sisters in laws: Dorothy Thomas (Roy) and Lenora Coleman and one brother-in-law David Allen Johnson.

She joined Mangohick Baptist Church at the age of six, where she sang on the Junior Choir, Voices of Praise and The Philip Cook Memorial Choir. She later moved her membership to Life- Line for Jesus Community Church and is presently an active member of Heaven's Haven International Christian Ministries.

Gloria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, Nana, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, friend and much more. She was a die-hard Washington Commanders fan and knew absolutely nothing about the games. She was a diligent worker all her life. As a young woman she held many different jobs. She graduated from Bowling Green Senior High, class of 1973.

On June 23, 1979, she was joined in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Purcell Johnson Sr. They were married for 45 years. To this union they were blessed with three children.

Gloria leaves to cherish her memories, her husband Purcell Johnson Sr, her three children: Percell Johnson Jr ( LaCresaha, fiancée), David Johnson (Princess) and Landonia Weeden (Michael), eight grandchildren: Aaliyah Johnson, Davion Johnson, David Johnson, Tamiia Matthews, Davarion Johnson, Keion Matthews Jr, Michael Weeden Jr and Samar Weeden, two sisters: Maxine Fleming (Barry) and Lucille Rosenburg, two brothers: Leon Straus (Shirley) and Earl Braxton, six sister in laws, five brother in laws, three devoted friends: Alto Wills, Pauline Washington and Vanessa Brown and a host of nieces and nephews.
