Herman Edmond Miller He was born on March 1, 1924, (youngest of five children) to Charlie and Mary Jane Miller. He grew up in Elmont and attended school in Ashland. After high school, he studied tailoring, but decided not to pursue that career. He worked at Miller & Rhodes Department store as an Elevator Operator until he was drafted into the military. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After his basic training and schooling in Texas, he was assigned as a Cook on the USS Montpelier, where he saw duty in Brazil, Trinidad and many of the Caribbean Islands before being honorably discharged in 1946. Herman returned to his job at Miller & Rhodes and remained there for another 10 years. In 1956, he begin working at McGuire Veterans Hospital. He retired from McGuire with over 30 years of service. Herman Miller gave his life to Christ at an early age and has been a lifelong member of First Baptist Church-Elmont. He has served faithfully on the Sanctuary Choir (bka Senior Choir) and the Adam Grimes Male Choir. His other interests include a love of jazz music, especially Count Basie's orchestra. For many years, he turned his passion for photography into a career, and was known as " Have Camera, Will Travel". Herman transitioned from this life on October 15, 2014, at the McGuire's Veterans Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted sister, Charlene Annette Miller Davis, brother, George P. Miller, niece, Mary Jane Smith, nephew, Harold Miller, Jr.(Jacqueline) of Maryland, nephews, Trepin Tate (Melissa), Michael (Cece), and other relatives and friends, especially two devoted, Deaconess Laura Grimes and Joyce Knight of Richmond.
