Obituary

God saw the road was getting rough.

The hills were hard to climb.

He whispered unto thee and said, "Alvin, come on home."

James Alvin Cosby was born on June 18, 1939, to James Henry Cosby and Lillian Johnson Cosby in Louisa, Virginia. He entered eternal rest on Friday, December 27, 2024. He was the oldest of eleven children.

James received Christ at a very early age and was baptized at Watch Tower Baptist Church in Bumpass, Virginia. He was actively involved in the D.C. Chapter, Watch Tower Baptist Church Club while living in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. In addition, James attended First Mount Zion Baptist in Dumfries, Virginia and was a member of the Seniors' Ministry. After relocating to Louisa County, James became a member of Sharon Christian Church and participated in many of the activities such as Sunday School and monthly breakfast fellowship.

He received his formal education at Mt. Garland Elementary School and graduated from A.G. Richardson High School in Louisa. After high school, he attended American University in Washington, DC.

James was employed for over forty years at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC and was recognized for his outstanding work. During his tenure there he made many friends and established relationships that he treasured throughout his life. After his retirement, he volunteered as an usher at the Performing Arts Centers because he enjoyed the many plays and events that were hosted at the various centers. Also, his hobbies included bowling, fitness, reading and traveling.

In 1963, James married Loretta Diggs and to this union they had two daughters, Arleta G. Cosby and Samanta G. Cosby.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James H. Cosby and Lillian J. Cosby and his sister Joyce A. Cosby.

He leaves to mourn his passing, two daughters, Arleta G. Cosby and Samanta G. Cosby; four sisters: Joan A. Hunt, Linda C. Charity, Patricia C. Dandridge (Earl), Sharon E. Cosby and five brothers: Elmer R. Cosby (Vivian), Robert H. Cosby (Sherion), Milton D. Cosby (Tara), Glen A. Cosby (Valerie) and Donald T. Cosby; godson, Michael Nuckols (Pancy); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
