Deacon James Wesley Gethers, affectionately known as "Sarge", was born in Waltersboro, SC on February 28, 1930 to Jessie Gethers and Ella Mae Robinson Gethers and entered into his eternal rest on Thursday, October 21, 2021 while resting at the Hunter Holmes Veteran Affairs Hospice Unit.
"Sarge" attended and graduated from the public schools of Walterboro, SC. "Sarge" furthered his education at Temple School in Washington, D.C. with a concentration in Radio, TV, Electronic Repair after relocating to the area.
He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and joined the AME Church. He later as an adult joined the Second Baptist Church, Ruther Glen, VA. He served as a Deacon for over 20 years and served faithfully. "Sarge" was also a part of Second Baptist Men's Choir (he LOVED to sing) and Missionary Ministry.
"Sarge" served in the United States Army after graduating from high school for 2 years. He fought on the front line in World War II and the Korean War. After honorable discharge, he relocated to Northern Virginia where he began working for the United States Postal Service. He worked as a Distribution Clerk, Rack Expediter, General Expediter, and an Acting Supervisor.
"Sarge" was a devout Freeman, Eastern Star, and Shriner. He was also a lifetime VFW member.
"Sarge" was united in Holy Matrimony with Deaconess Lucille Pleasant on June 27, 1992 and because of this union, he was blessed with three sons, Linwood, Jr., Sheldon, and Darian.
"Sarge" was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Ella Mae Gethers, three sisters and four brothers.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories, his lovely, devoted and committed wife, Lucille; his children, Linwood, Jr. (Rosalind), Sheldon (Janel), and Darian; eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one sister-in-law Ruth Gethers, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories and to carry on his legacy as well, his devoted and committed grandson and caregiver, "Mookie".
