Obituary

Mr. James Lenwood Mickens was born on October 5, 1931, the first of 5 children to the late George and Eva Mickens in Louisa County, VA.

His early education started in Louisa County Virginia public schools.

Mr. Mickens transitioned this life on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at the Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, D.C. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, George and Eva Mickens, his devoted wife, Hannah F. Mickens and his loving brother, Archie Mickens.

At a very young age , in 1944, he joined the Laurel Hill Baptist Church to proclaim his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He maintained a lasting relationship with the church and was faithful in his pilgrimage to the annual homecoming services.

Upon graduating from high school (1950), he courted and married the love of his life, Hannah Frye on August 27, 1955. From that union two sons were born, Lavoisier (Tony) and Vento. Shortly after their marriage, James and Hannah made Washington, D.C. their home.

To Mr. Mickens, his entire family was paramount in his life.

Mr. Mickens retired from Sears and Roebuck after working for many years.

In 1958, he joined the Mount Carmel Church, Hanover County Virginia serving on the Deacon Board.

Mr. Mickens has been an icon of Freemasonry in the District of Columbia for decades. RWGTE James Mickens Raised in 1957. PM Mickens was elected Worshipful Master in 1967. He served as the Lodge's Treasurer for twenty years before being elected as Trustee of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Fellowship No. 26, from which he earned the distinction of Trustee Emeritus.

Mr. Mickens absolutely loved his garden, some would say, his sanctuary. His garden was a place where the worries of this world faded away. He spent his days tending to his beloved garden, a place with a vibrant tapestry of colors and fragrances that he carefully nurtured with love and patience. His fish pond was a calming element in his beautiful garden.

Photo grapy was also a great passion of his, collecting hundreds of slides from pictures taken of family, friends, vacation trips, nature, and other events.

Mr. Mickens leaves to mourn his great loss and to celebrate a great man who led a great life, two( 2) sons, Lavoisier (Tony) (Gretchen), Vento (Carolyn), all of Washington, D.C.; one granddaughter, Jasmine Mickens of Hyattsville, Maryland; three (3) brothers, Reid Mickens (Marion), Raphael Mickens (Madeline) and Charles Mickens (Joanne); Sister-in-law, Rebecca Mickens. Many nieces and nephews and other close relatives and friends will remember Uncle Jim, Uncle Lenwood, James, or Mr. Mickens as he is so fondly known to those who knew him.
