James Scott Toliver, affectionately known by all as "Boodie", transitioned peacefully with his loving family by his side of February 22, 2025, at the age of 91.
James "Boodie" was born the only child to the late Carrie Jane Toliver on June 13, 1933, in Caroline County, VA. With the help of her sister and brother-in-law Mr.& Mrs. Ervin and Esther Boone, she raised James "Boodie" to be a God-fearing man.
James received his early education at McDuff School. At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, Chilesburg, VA. where his great grandfather Jack Taliaferro, was one of the first appointed deacons of the church. He later went on to worship at New Beginnings Fellowship.
James met Shirley Laverne Nelson, and they were married in 1965. They were married for 59 years and were blessed with four daughters, Agatha "Dee", Juanita, Jeanette and April.
Under the guidance of Mr. Eddie Nelson Sr., James "Boodie" worked for the U.S. Government at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, where he retired after 30 years. Due to his hardworking nature, he returned to work after three years of retirement and he would work at Petro for 23 years and worked many years at the Virginia Bazaar before he officially retired. James had a variety of hobbies such as racing, gardening, going on bus trips, horseshoes, fishing and hunting. He was an avid sports fan dedicated to the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant. In his later years, James "Boodie" could be found playing his keyboard, guitar or watching one of his favorite reality shows over a bowl of chocolate ice cream with a side of cookies. A soft-spoken, loving, humble person, known to offer a helping hand to anyone.
