Obituary

Per Jean's Request, there will be no public viewing.

Our love one Jean Braxton transitioned from this life peacefully on December 7, 2024. She was born on September 8, 1937, in Hanover, Virginia to Edward and Victoria Braxton (preceded her in death). She was baptized at a young age at First Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Dawn Virginia.

Jean graduated from Union High School, Bowling Green, Virginia in June 1957. Her goal after high school was to become a care giver for others. Jean moved to Brooklyn, New York after graduation where she accomplished her career goal. She received her certification for adult and baby care in January 1960. Her employment history included being a caregiver for Olsten Health Services. Later on in life Jean moved back to Virginia where she continued to work as a caregiver.

She loved shopping, buying things she needed and things she didn't need. Thursdays were designated as her shopping day. She would leave home around 11:00 AM and return around 5:00 PM. The statement shop until you drop, fit her perfectly. She would visit 3-4 grocery stores in one day. When asked why, she would reply, because each store's advertisement flyer had different sale items. She couldn't pass up a good sale.

On a warm day you could find Jean sitting on the porch coloring in her adult-coloring books or putting together her 1,000-piece puzzles. She would often say these things were relaxing to her. Jean also loved traveling. Her niece Gwen included her in their family trips to places like Hawaii, Florida and Tennessee. Jean was self-sufficient until her health slowly began to decline in 2024.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Edith Tarrer, Rosa Dabney and Freddie Braxton.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her sister Carrie Winston; sister-in-law, Lathania Braxton; nieces, Mayon Peatross (Nathan), Jennifer Baylor, Gwendolyn Wilson, Rena Lipscomb, Aneshia Thomas, Debra Dabney, Dawn Dabney, Dorine Tillman (Larry), Janice Tarrer, Mona Jones; nephews, Rodger Dabney (Monique), Robert Tarrer, Jr., Michael Dabney, Anthony Dabney (Anna), Cornelius Dabney and a host of family members, neighbors and friends.
