Obituary

Jean Evelyn Chandler departed this life on March 10, 2020 after she lost a long battle with cancer, she was surrounded by her loving family at home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Jean was born July 25, 1937, the daughter of the late Thomas and Betty Mines and Leroy and Evelyn Morris. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters: Melvin Morris, Cristine Mines, Glenda Mines and Nana Coleman.

Jean received her formal education from Virginia Public Schools. After leaving Virginia and moving to the DC and Maryland area she became gainfully employed at Zayres. After twenty-three years of hard work and dedication she retired. Retirement brought her more time to devote to the Lord. That is when she became a member of Bright Light Baptist Church in Takoma Park, Maryland. The love she had for praising the lord lead her to sing in two choirs; the Mass Choir and Angels of Faith. Jean also had a passion for food and loved to cook. She later began working part-time at the University of Maryland as a server aide, she stayed there for five years.

Jean loved to laugh, sing old gospel hymns and spend time with her family.  She was a ray of sunshine and her smile would light up any room. She was the epitome of a woman; devoted mother, faithful wife, supportive sister and nurturing aunt. Jean was known as the "Matriarch" of her family and her compassion and love for all will be greatly missed.

On March 10, 1956 she joined in Holy Matrimony to Charles Henry Chandler, the love of her life for sixty-four years. To this union two children were born, Reginald Chandler and Cynthia Patrick (Jimmy). Her love and memories live on in all her family members, her grandchildren: Chantella Williams of Richmond, VA; Duriel Chandler and Maurice Chandler (Tysha) of Laurel, Maryland;  Great-grandchildren: Alexia Davis, Aaliya Davis, Keleis Sauls, Tyleah Arrington, Tylynn Arrington and Tyla Arrington; One great- great grandchild Messiah Ross; Goddaughter Janet Shiffer (Steve) of Wake Forest, NC; god-grandchildren: Kahniley Shiffer, Sekou Shiffer and Melissa Shiffer;  Sisters: Gladys Goodall, Mamie Johnson of Dawn, VA; Brothers: Clifford Mines of Dawn, VA; Alvin Mines (Elaine) of Hanover, VA; Thomas Mines, Jr. (Senora) of Richmond, VA; Two aunts: Mary "May" Price and Maude Tilman of Dawn, VA; Three brother-in-laws: Andrew "Andy" Chandler of Richmond, VA; James "Mike" Chandler (Earlene) of Washington, DC; Walter "Kenny" Chandler (Denise) of Dawn, VA; A host of nieces, nephews, one devoted Wanda Burruss and cousins.
