Jeanette Smithers
Jones
April 18, 1951 – July 18, 2024
Early in the morning of Thursday, July 18, 2024, at 8:22 A.M., Jeanette heard the bells tolling, answered the call, and peacefully transitioned from labor to reward at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Mechanicsville, Virginia.
Jeanette was born April 18, 1951, in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Manley Percy Smithers, Sr. and Estelle Adell Fells Smithers. She was one of eight children. Jeanette's Christian Walk began by uniting with Christ at Second Mount Zion Baptist Church. Her faith was unwavering as evidenced by her love and belief in God, her devotion to her family and unselfish service toward her fellow man.
Jeanette received her early education in the Caroline County Public School System. After graduating, she would attend Woodrow Wilson Technical School in Fishersville, Virginia developing a trade in sewing. She worked diligently and faithfully for 38 years as a Head Cook for TruckStops of America (TSA) before her retirement in 2002. She would later resume her career, working as a Home Health Aide until 2014.
On June 24, 1975, she was united in holy matrimony with Mitchell Leon Jones. To this union, one son was born, Victor McCoy.
She was a beloved wife, devoted daughter, sister and friend. She was kind, loving, and possessed a gift to put others at comfort. J.J. never met a stranger without becoming friends. She touched the lives of many people with her smile, generosity, and maintained her trademark sense of humor until her health began to fail. She loved listening to music, dancing, attending church services, laughing, and being with family and friends. She enjoyed the simplicity of life and was often found reflecting outside, enjoying nature. She was empathetic, insightful, and willing to help others in need. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven" (Matthew 5:16). She was a kind and loving person with a quick wit and keen sense of humor. Her love for her family was immeasurable, as she took pride in each accomplishment, often boasting and bantering proudly about what good things would happen next in their lives. J.J. loved and adored her nieces and nephews, each of them had a nickname bestowed upon them by her. There was nothing that she would not do for her family. If there was a need, J.J. made sure it was met. She was the life of the party. Together, she and her late husband catered weddings and other celebratory events. They took pride in their work and were sought after by many.
Jeanette was predeceased by her husband, Mitchell; parents, Manley, Sr. and Estelle Smithers; brothers, Manley, Jr. (Cut) and Harvey; sisters, Sarah Malinda Williams, Senora L. James, and Estelle Hines (Tickie); and Sister/Cousin Annie Bell Chandler.
