Smith
May 20, 1936 – August 4, 2025
JEROME Smith
Jerome Smith, age 89, of Ruther Glen, Virginia—affectionately known as Granddaddy, Uncle Jerome, Smitty, and Homer passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, surrounded by the family he so deeply cherished. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-granddaddy, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend, Jerome's life was a testament to quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and a profound sense of responsibility. His legacy is one of love, laughter, faith, and enduring devotion to those he held dear. Born in Washington, D.C., Jerome was the fifth of eight children of the late George Washington Smith, Sr. and Mary Lee Cashwell-Smith. After his parents' separation, he moved with his mother and siblings to Arlington, Virginia, where he quickly stepped into a role of support and protection. Even as a middle child, Jerome led with character and compassion, demonstrating that true leadership is not measured by age, but by heart. He attended Langston Elementary and Hoffman-Boston Schools.
A LOVE THAT ENDURED
At just 19 years old, Jerome met and married the love of his life, Margaret Florence Goodall. On June 4, 2025, they celebrated 70 years of marriage. A remarkable union built on devotion, resilience, and joy. Together, Jerome and Margaret raised five children and created a home filled with warmth and strength.
A LIFE OF SERVICE AND HONOR
Jerome's commitment to service was evident in his years as a volunteer firefighter at the historic Halls Hill Volunteer Fire Station 8. His courage and loyalty left a lasting impression, and he was recently honored as the last living volunteer from Station 8—a tribute to his bravery and steadfast dedication to protecting his community.
FAMILY, FAITH, AND JOY
Family was the heart of Jerome's joy. He had a remarkable gift for making others feel welcome from his laughter echoing from the porch, to his competitive spirit shining at the card table in Spades and Pinochle. A lifelong sports enthusiast and music lover, Jerome often filled family gatherings with the sounds of Big Joe Turner and the warmth of shared memories. Generous to a fault, he was always ready to help those in need, yet fiercely protective of those he loved. His spiritual foundation was rooted in faith. Jerome found spiritual nourishment and inspiration at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Arlington, where he deeply appreciated the sermons of the late Reverend Leonard N. Smith. In 2004, Jerome and Margaret retired to Ruther Glen, where they built their forever home, a place of peace, love, and lasting memories. He took great pride in acquiring 60 acres in Caroline County, creating a cherished haven for family gatherings, quiet reflection, and a legacy that will endure for generations.
A PASSION FOR THE GAME
A gifted athlete, Jerome was a standout baseball player for the Halls Hill White Sox Negro sandlot team, earning the nickname "Homer" for his powerful swing. In the 1970s, after relocating to Fairfax County, he proudly coached his sons' baseball teams; passing down his skills, sportsmanship, and deep respect for the game. Jerome also built a distinguished career in the grocery industry, spanning more than four decades. From stocking shelves to managing stores at Grand Union, Safeway, and Giant Food stores.
CHERISHED AND REMEMBERED
Jerome was preceded in death by his beloved eldest daughter, Wanda Smith-Woods, his grandson Kameron Smith, and by all of his siblings from the union of his parents: George Washington Smith, Jr., Louise Crenshaw, Robert Smith, Roy Smith, James Smith, Phyllis Smith, and Bernard Smith. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 70 years, Margaret Smith; his devoted children Deborah Samuel (Ronald), Dale Smith, Vincent Smith, and Karen Smith; his cherished brothers Anthony and Darryl (Adeline); his caring brothers-in-law William Goodall (Jacqueline) and Ray Goodall (Lois); and his dear sister-in-law Patricia Cole. He is also lovingly remembered by 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives were deeply enriched by his presence.
A LEGACY OF LOVE
Jerome's life is a powerful reminder that where you begin does not determine where you end. Through faith, courage, and love, he touched countless lives and leaves behind a legacy that will forever live in the hearts of his family, friends, and community. Well done, Jerome—Daddy, Granddaddy, Homer, Smitty. Thank you. We love you
