Life Reflections

Affectionately called "Boy," John Tyrone Jackson was born in Manhattan, New York. John was the son of John and Ernestine Jackson.

John graduated (1965) from Dillard High School (Goldsboro, North Carolina). Shortly after graduation, John was drafted into the U.S. Army. John is a two-year U.S. Army Veteran (1965-1967). His service in Vietnam earned him the Bronze Star medal.

John was a devoted employee at Horizon Blue Cross & Blue Shield (Newark, New Jersey) for more than 25 years. In 1980, John incurred a T8-T9 spinal cord injury. Recognizing the need to do more for spinal cord-injured veterans, John used his injury to become a peer counselor and advocate for change.

Upon retirement, John moved to Richmond, VA. As an active Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) member, John held various positions, including national president, vice-president, director, secretary, and sports director.

In 2003, Virginia Governor Mark Warner appointed John to the Joint Leadership Council, a veterans service organization that provides direct and indirect support for Virginia veterans and their families. John was also a member of the American Legion and the National Parkinson's Disease Association.

John enjoyed sports and was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan! John joined and competed in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. A few of his favorite sports achievements were adaptive basketball, skiing, and air gun competitions. A noteworthy accomplishment in 2019, John achieved his "bucket list" goal and parachuted from a plane!

John leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life: his sister, Yvonne Moore, her husband, Wendell (Maryland); his sister, Sandra Moore, her husband, Daniel (Florida); his stepbrother, John Martin Jackson (Virginia); four devoted nieces, Kimberly Moore, Lisa Bulls, Latreace Grisby, Tobie Hutchinson, and one nephew, Daniel Brooks Moore; eight great nieces and nephews; four great-great nieces and nephews; his former wife, Martha Jackson; a devoted cousin, Mildred Chavis; and a host of other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Jackson and Ernestine Brooks, and his stepfather, Joshua H. Brooks.
