Joseph Thomas Mines, affectionately known as “Bike,” “Drummer Boy,” or “Pop,” was born June 28, 1941, to the late Emmitt Ashby Mines Sr. and Ida Burrell Mines of Hanover County, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 23 years, Joyce Thompson Mines; eight brothers, George Burrell, Curtis Chamberlain, Emmitt Jr., William, John, James, Rufus, and Percy Mines; and his sister, Catherine Robinson.

Bike accepted Jesus Christ at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Beaverdam, Virginia, where he was a member of the male chorus. He attended Hanover County Public Schools and graduated from John M. Gandy High School. In his earlier years, Bike was an avid baseball player, and during his spare time, he still loved to sit down and watch the game.

Bike was employed by Southern Specials Products for over 30 years before retiring in 2003. After retiring, he enjoyed manicuring his yard, sitting under his tree, and spending time with his loved ones.

On August 27, 2026, Bike transitioned peacefully at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Bike leaves to cherish his fond memories: his daughters, Tracey “Nesie” Jackson (Owen) and Toya Trueheart (Micheal); granddaughter, Brittany Smith; great-granddaughter, Monroe Henley; two sisters, Ruth “Sister” Braxton and Ida “Nomo” Anderson; two step-grandchildren, Mykeal and Shante Trueheart; godson, H. Michael Benford Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Mines and Clarette Mines; supportive caregiver, Krystle Bruce; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
