Obituary

Mrs. Lillie Mae Goode Preast was the fifth child born to Victoria and the late Samuel Goode on September 3, 1940 in Elizabeth City, New Jersey. Lil received her education from Virginia Randolph High School, Virginia State University and J Sergeant Reynolds Community College where she was certified as a deaf interpreter. She was also an interior designer and graduate of the American School of Design and the Singer School of Tailoring in Washington, DC. Lil retired from Hanover County Public Schools in 2006 after 14 years of instructional service. Most recently, she worked part time at McCoy Publishing doing what she loved most, sewing. Lil was a born again Christian and gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She was a staunch supporter of her husband, the late Rev. James E Preast, Jr. in the gospel ministry. She served effectively and successfully as First Lady of the Bright Hope Baptist Church in Louisa, VA, the Beulah Baptist Church in Spotsylvania, VA and most recently, the Mangohick Baptist Church in King William, VA. Lil was a long term active member and supporter of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Glen Allen, VA. Lil married Codoza J. Smith, Sr. and to their union five children were born; Codoza Smith Jr. and Troy Smith preceded her in death. For thirty one years she was married to the late Rev. James E. Preast, Jr. She had many passions; the most important was her devotion to her family especially her children and grandchildren. Lil loved cooking, sewing, reading, traveling, decorating and designing. She loved fashion, style, and her hats. Her exceptional talents have been featured in many local newspapers. Lil was a very active participant in the of Minister's Wives and Widows fellowship of Richmond and Vicinity and she supported the National and International activities of this vital organization. Lil enjoyed life and loved people. She was a caring, supportive friend and mentor. She made a positive impact on everyone, young and old. She was a fun loving person who loved to laugh and make others laugh. She especially loved her dog, Rocky. Lil leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Carolyn Smith, Brenda Smith and Brenda Majid; one son, Rodney Smith Sr. (Valerie); mother, Victoria Goode; seven grandchildren, Jeffery O'Neal, Lakeya Mason, Alexys Smith, Rodney Smith Jr., Markus Smith, Lakeya Majid and Shakeira Majid; three sisters, Irene Taylor, Beatrice Downs, and Patricia Smith (Horace); three brothers, Norman Goode, Darius Goode and Dennis Goode and: a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends-among them devoted, Shirley Stitt and Deacon and Deaconess Emmanuel Robinson. Lil attributed all of her achievements to consistently, "looking to the hills from whence cometh her help," knowing that her help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth. Her favorite bible verse was: Romans 8:28 and we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.
