Linwood
Fowlkes
September 18, 1958 – December 23, 2021
Linwood Fowlkes was born on September 18, 1958 to the late Catherine Dandridge Fowlkes and Frederick Landon Fowlkes, Sr. in Richmond, Virginia. He departed this life on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by his brother Frederick L. Fowlkes, Jr.
Linwood was educated in the New Kent Public School System where he graduated from New Kent High School in 1977. He was active in basketball and football.
At an early age, Linwood realized he needed a Savior and was baptized in Plum Point, Virginia. After becoming aware of life's challenges and the need for a church home in the Richmond area, he rededicated his life to the Lord and became a faithful member of the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, Virginia under the leadership of Rev. Lorenzo Nicholson in 1991. Linwood found his calling in the ministry of helps. He served faithfully for many years as an usher until his untimely death. He was head usher and president over the Ushers' ministry as well as president of the Male Usher Board. He was truly a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord. Linwood was always willing to donate to other ministries in their projects as being the first one to give and making sure the rest of the ushers would give; he would step up when an usher was late or even out on a particular Sunday.
Linwood married Carolyn Lewis on September 7, 1991 at the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church. He was a dedicated and faithful husband to Carolyn and was so very proud of being a husband. He showered her with an overwhelming love. Everyone knew he was married and to whom he was married! His Carolyn!! And he knew she loved him.
Linwood started working for the VA Department of Taxation on August 16, 1980. At the time of his passing, he worked as a Warehouse Supervisor. He loved his co-workers and always tried to assist wherever he was needed. He would rather work to allow others to take needed time off – vacation or sick time. He was a very dedicated employee and very seldom missed a day. He blended in with everyone from the Commissioner to the maintenance personnel. Linwood was also employed part-time for 27 years with ABM. He seldom missed a day and just recently volunteered to allow an employee time off by working in her place. He went from one job to another. Never wanting to be late, he would arrive sometimes an hour early to ensure it.
Linwood loved his family. He always referred to his stepson as "my son," and "my daughter, my grandsons, and my granddaughter." He loved his sisters and brother unconditionally. He would check on them constantly and if they needed him, he was there for them. He loved Carolyn so much, he would call her a few times a day and night until he walked in the door at 10 p.m. Linwood was a San Francisco 49ers fan. You could find him either watching sports, or talking about sports on his phone. He also loved to play tricks and to joke! His life was loving the Lord, his family and work.
He leaves his family and friends with unforgettable memories: devoted and loving wife, Carolyn; devoted son, Glen Lewis, Jr. (Jeannette); grandchildren, Glen M. Lewis, Irving Morales, and Kailyn Torres; loving sisters, Rose Williams of North Carolina and Leslie Fowlkes (James) of Newport News, Virginia; devoted brother, Arnold Fowlkes (Cleo) of North Carolina; a loving aunt, Hazel Fowlkes of Crewe, Virginia; loving sisters-in-law, Rosemary Jacobs, Marilyn Brooks of Richmond, and Patricia Bagby (Keith) of North Carolina; and a devoted brother-in-law, Thomas Allen of Mechanicsville; adopted children, Alex and Carol Henry; a host of loving nieces and nephews from New York, Maryland, Virginia to North Carolina; as well as other relatives and friends. Linwood had some special friends, his "Barbershop Crew" -- Garry Holmes, Quinton Stewart, Tyrone Powell, Carlos Payne, and Rick Whittle.
