Melvin L.
Freeman
February 17, 1955 – October 3, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin Lee Freeman, who went home to be with the Lord on October 3, 2025, following a period of declining health. He was born on February 17, 1955, and leaves behind a family and community who will remember him with love and respect.
Melvin was a man of many talents, known for his work as a landscape architect and a mechanic, one of the best around. He took great pride in his work and had a natural gift for understanding the intricacies of both nature and machinery. Melvin was also an accomplished artist, passing down his passion for creativity to his two sons, Jermaine and Victor. His artistry was reflected in every aspect of his life, whether in his carefully designed landscapes or creating a new piece of artwork.
An avid outdoorsman, Melvin was a longtime member of the 600 and D6 Hunting Clubs, where he earned a reputation as an extreme hunting enthusiast. He was especially famous for his venison (deer) tenderloin and the best bread pudding you will ever eat. Both treats that will be remembered fondly by many. He cherished his time in the woods and the camaraderie of those who shared his love for the hunt.
Melvin accepted Christ at an early age and attended Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Shurmanville, Virginia, current Pastor, Gilbert Garcia.
Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Edward M. Freeman; his mother, Mrs. Adell Lee-Davis; stepfather, Wilbert Davis; and his uncle, Jake Lee.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories, wife of 46 years, Cynthia Alethea Freeman; his two sons, Jermaine L. Freeman and Victor J. Freeman. His three daughters, Deondra Banks, Joclyn Banks, and Cierra Banks; four brothers, James (Amy) Freeman, Wilbert Davis Jr., Keith Davis and Kevin Davis and four sisters, Ann (Brent) Childs, Gloria Davis, Marion Moore and Carolyn Davis. He is survived by six aunts, Laura (Nathaniel) Taylor, Florence (Samuel Ronald) Rhue, Rose (Elis) Edler, Bernice Wingfield, Sarah (Raymond) Carter and Christine Lee; two uncles, Al (Cynthia) Lee and Mack Lee; four devoted friends, Barbar Cook, Earl (Ruby) Young, Tim (Carolyn) Claiborne and Thomas (Ivonne) Claiborne and three dedicated caregivers, Antione Green, Veronica (Lawrence) Gregory and Dorothy (James) Gibson and devoted cousin, Charmisha Moss. In addition, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and his fur-baby Killa. All will miss him and carry his memory forward.
Though Melvin's life was filled with both challenges and triumphs, his legacy of hard work, creativity and his love for the outdoors will continue to be remembered by those who knew him.
Melvin will be remembered for his unique spirit, his hands-on skill, his creativity, spicy mouth and the warmth he shared with those who truly knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held at H.W. Dabney Funeral Home 518 N. Washington Hwy Ashland, Virginia 23005. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice in Melvin's honor.
