Michael Odell
Winston
May 23, 1951 – September 9, 2024
Michael Odell Winston succumbed to his Heavenly Father's call to home on September 9th, 2024. He ascended to his Savior's loving arms. He was born on May 23rd, 1951, to his parents, Claudie and Rosa Winston of Louisa County Virginia. Both parents preceded him in death.
He was one of five children, his sister Cheryl and brother Reginald, both preceded him in death. In 1970, Michael met Yvonne Sanders (deceased) and from their union their daughter Felicia Sanders was born. He was raised for the first 13 years of his life by his late Aunt Bernice and Uncle Clarence Waller. He received a strong foundation for life because of his upbringing. Their influence fostered his unyielding spiritual self as well as his character as a pillar of strength in our family.
At an early age, Michael accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Bumpass, Virginia. Michael joined his parents and siblings in Harlem, NY at the age of 13 years old. He thrived in his new environment. His scholastic achievements won him a seat as a student at the prestigious John Jay High School in Brooklyn, NY. As a teenager, he helped to organize and run the Police Athletic League (PAL) as crew chief in the neighborhood. He strongly believed in "each one teach one," using outside thinking and negotiation skills to get kids off the streets and into constructive activities on the weekends.
In 1973, Michael started out as a Coach Cleaner for Amtrak and was encouraged to become a Car Inspector, then later a Foreman. He retired in 2011 after 38 years of service. He was known as the "Johnny Cochran" Union Shop Steward who protected and defended the rights of the employees. His greatest pastimes were working on cars, collecting vintage models and watching his favorite cop shows. He often shared his wisdom with his loved ones by engaging in enticing conversations where he educated them on a wealth of information. Michael met the love of his life Sherrie Teachey and started a strong commitment that spanned over 45 years. They were married on January 5th, 2015.
Michael leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Sherrie Teachey-Winston, the pride and joy of his life; one devoted daughter, Felicia Sanders; one granddaughter, Roniece Crawford; one adopted granddaughter, Taniya Seay; and one adopted great grandson Tatum Seay; one sister, Joan Gaston; one brother Roderick Winston (Debra); one adopted brother Tony Derricott (Donna); one aunt, Evelyn Kelley; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
