Mildred Maxine Hawkins better known to everyone as simply "Grandma" was the fourth child out of thirteen born to the late Rev. Everett Lampkins and Edith Jenkins Lampkins on September 1, 1929 in Max Meadows, VA.
She was preceded in death by siblings Rosa Lee, James Donald, Dorthea, Ulysses, Gladys Lampkins; Nancy Bryson, and Roberta Funderburk as well as son-in-law, Franklin Jackson.
Mildred was educated and graduated from the Wytheville Training School on June 3, 1949, where she was awarded a certificate for regularity and punctual attendance, having been never absent from school or tardy.
After marrying her high school sweetheart, they agreed to explore outside of country living; she migrated to D.C. we're she settled down and began the life of an Army military wife.
In 1964 she began her 30-year career at The Macke Company as a Snack Bar Hostess.
Continuing her spiritual journey she became a faithful member of Spirit of Peace in Capital Heights, MD., where she assisted her sisters with the hospitality committee for some years.
After retirement she enjoyed her downtime with Soap Operas, Game Shows, Dominos, and the Lottery, which she may have won a time or two, but as she would say, "That's none of your business!"
Grandma also knew her way around a kitchen and became quite the baker, she was well known for her lemon meringue pie and brownies.
Realizing it was never too late for a change, she relocated to Ashland, VA in 1997 to be closer to family where she attended worship services and later on became an attendee of Friendship Café at Shiloh Baptist Church.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: one daughter, Gwendolyn Hawkins-Jackson; three grandchildren; Nathaniel and Deon McKan and Karena Jackson; two bonus grandsons, Delano and Jeffery Jackson; 15 great grandchildren, two great-great grandsons; five siblings, Edward (Mattie) Lampkins, Gertrude Lampkins, Patty (Joseph) Truesdale, Wanda Sockwell, and Diane Lampkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
