Obituary

Nachay Denise Lewis was born October 31, 1959 in Richmond, Virginia and departed this life and entered eternal life on December 12, 2022 at Henrico Doctor's Hospital.

Nachay was preceded in death by her Parents, Leroy, Sr. and Naomi Garnett Lewis; Grandparents, Willie and Irene Winston Garnett and Forrest and Sallie Lewis; and her siblings, Leroy, Jr., Karl Lewis and Rhonda Lewis Hill.

Nachay grew up in Hanover County and graduated from Lee Davis High School (now Mechanicsville High) and graduated from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

Nachay was baptized and a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Hanover Courthouse and later she was baptized and became a member of the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Rufus Adkins.  She found her calling in the ministry of helps and served on the ushers' ministry until she could no longer serve, but continued to attend faithfully.  She also served on the Missionary Ministry until her passing.  When her health began to decline, Nachay watched Bible study and worship services on Zoom.  She also continued to support her church financially.

Jumping to the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church family: they kept in touch with her daily. If they could not reach her on her house phone they would call her cell phone!  If they didn't call her, she would call them.  She loved hearing from each one to find out if they were okay, even their families and communities.  And yes, she would fall asleep sometime while talking to them and laugh about it later.

After graduating from J. Sargeant Reynolds, Nachay was employed approximately 22 years by SunTrust Bank until she retired on disability.  She made a few friends while working there and enjoyed some after-work activities: she would hang with her "after-work dinner group!"  Thank you Pamela, Tonia, Jackie, Sharon, Bernet, Robin, Ella, and Wanda for sharing your love with her.  We ask that you continue to share your love and stories of her with each other.  Nachay loved to joke and laugh and show you funny stuff on YouTube if you stopped by for a visit.  Growing up she loved to watch "Saturday Night Live" and other funny shows on TV!

Nachay loved to read and that's what she did while her siblings and cousins were outside playing. She was inside reading her many books…. she loved to read, the feel and smell of books. Reading is where her intelligence came from.  Her nephew Chuckie mentioned recently that if you needed to spell a word or needed the meaning of a word she had it.  She loved seeing pictures/videos of her great-nieces and nephews.

In our lifetime we make friends who are closer than actual blood family.  Nachay has had great friends and we can't name them all, but there is one her family would love to thank and could never repay:  Lola Williams, classmate, became family and gave her time and energy---blood if she needed it.

Nachay is now loosed from the frailties of this life and we must let her go --  to cherish her memories are: one aunt: Helen Lewis Jackson; nephews and nieces: Devonte', Charles, IV (Myiesha), Lamonn, Corey (Angelica), Elijah, Lanita, Teyonna, Sheena, Khadijah, Kayla, and Kanisha; six great-nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law: Elder Renae Lewis; a brother-in-law: Charles Hill III;  a very loving devoted friend/sister: Lola Williams, devoted cousins: Carolyn Fowlkes, Rosemary Jacobs; classmate/childhood friend: Minister Jeanette Epps; and godson: Alexander Tinsley. There are many other family members and friends.

Per Nachay's request, there will be no viewing.
