Naomi Octavia
Garnett Lewis
May 27, 1935 – August 15, 2020
Naomi Octavia Garnett Lewis, daughter of the late Willie F. and Irene E. Garnett, was born May 27, 1935 in Hanover, Virginia. A resident of Autumn Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Mechanicsville, Virginia for a short period, peacefully made her transition from "Time into Timeless" on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the age of "85"
Naomi was educated in the Hanover County Public School System, graduating in 1952. She married Leroy Lewis, Sr. and together they had four children: Nachay, Rhonda, Leroy, Jr. and Karl. Her husband Leroy, Sr., Rhonda and Karl preceded her in death.
Naomi realized when she was a youth that she needed a Savior. Expressing this need she confessed her sins, was baptized and became a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church, Hanover Courthouse. She took piano lessons as a young girl, she used her gift to become their pianist. After she married Leroy, she took her children to Calvary to begin their foundation. Later she moved her membership, was baptized and joined the Greater Nazarene Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, where she served for many years. Under the leadership of Reverend Rufus Adkins and Reverend Lorenzo Nicholson, Sr., she served diligently on the Senior Usher ministry. She also served faithfully on the Missionary ministry and used her talent for cooking served on the Culinary ministry. Who could forget her famous "potato salad" and "macaroni/cheese"?
Naomi was employed by the State of Virginia in the Department of Corrections until she retired on disability. Even there she "WOWed" them with her cooking skills; also prepared special items for the menu while being employed at "Catherine's Restaurant!"
Even after her health began to decline, she continued to keep in touch with her church family by joining in Bible study by telephone. Speaking of the telephone: Naomi had a "Telephone Girlfriend Squad!" She would receive calls almost daily to keep her encouraged! The "Squad" consisted of: Sister Laura Howard, Deaconess Arletha Winston, Deaconess Doris Wingfield, and Mrs. Ophelia Lewis. After being admitted in Autumn Care, her daughter provided a cell phone so they could continue to keep in touch. Since Covid-19 pandemic visitation was restricted but that didn't prevent her family and church family from showing love by "window visitation:" Thank you Deacon Gregory and Deaconess Yolanda Morris and Deacon Maurice Weatherless; just last week he sang "The Church is in the Valley" for her! Nachay would keep up with her by using "Zoom" calls where they could see each other!
We know you are wondering who took such great care of Naomi? We thank God every day for the last 6 years, because He sent a wonderful, loving and caring "Caregiver": Deaconess Ursala Harper. Deaconess Harper was much more than just a caregiver! She was more like a daughter and the entire family adopted her as "family" and pray our relationship with her will continue.
She leaves to cherish their memory of her: a very devoted daughter, Nachay Lewis, a loving son Elder Leroy Lewis, Jr., his wife Elder Renae. Grand-children: Charles Hill, IV and Corey Hill, Lamonn and Lanita Lewis, Devonte' Smith (she raised him), Sheena, Khadijah, Kanesha and Kayla; ten great-grand-children; niece Phyllis Davis, Shreveport, LA, nephew Albert Blalock, New York, a devoted nephew she helped raise, Norman Blalock, Jr (Maria) of Florida, Dennis and Darrell Richmond, a devoted cousin she helped raise Deaconess Carolyn Fowlkes (Linwood), sister-in-law Helen Jackson, a loving care giver a cousin Rosemary Jacobs and a very devoted friend, Mrs. Lola Williams, a host of family members and friends.
Naomi will be remembered having a very quiet spirit. You could see the love she had for God, family and friends. Her past time activity was her "Word Search" books which kept her company when she wasn't on the phone!!! On occasions, we would hear her say when faced with a challenge which she truly believed: "The Lord will make a way somehow!"
