Nathaniel Reddick,
Jr.
November 1, 1935 – September 10, 2023
Nathaniel Reddick, Jr. ("Nat"), the eldest son of the late Nathaniel Reddick, Sr. and Hattie Williams, was born on November 1, 1935, in Williamston, North Carolina. Nat was educated in public school at the beloved E. J. Hayes. He decided to quit school and soon joined the United States Air Force. Nat realized the importance of education and often spoke about his journey. In later years, Nat decided to complete his high school education through the GED program.
After returning home from the Air Force, Nat married the love of his life, Mildred Bell (deceased), who was also a resident of Williamston, NC and they moved to New York to raise their family. They lived in New York for a few years then moved down the east coast to Maryland, and to North Carolina until they found that Virginia was the place they loved most, and Richmond was to be their home. The family lived in Richmond over a decade until Nat got an opportunity to transfer to Piccadilly in Georgia.
Nat and Mildred not only loved their immediate family, but also gave of themselves to extended family as evidenced by frequent visits they made to family across the country. You could count on Nat and Mildred to send thoughtful cards and gifts for holidays, birthdays, and encouragement. Even before marriage, Nat assisted in raising his siblings. Nat and Mildred loved traveling; they went on several cruises and visited numerous states in the continental U.S., Aruba, London, and South Korea.
Affectionately known as the "Bossman", Nat was best described by one of his grandsons as full of wisdom, patience and love, delivered with a no-nonsense attitude. Nat was a son, husband, father, leader, teacher, guide, hard worker, veteran, and so much more. Nat loved working in the food industry and once owned a restaurant. For many years, Nat worked at Piccadilly Cafeteria where he started as a baker and retired as a manager. He enjoyed working at Piccadilly so much that numerous family members flocked to Richmond to work with him. Nat worked at Piccadilly Cafeteria until he retired from the Richmond, VA location in 1996.
Nat's passion for working was best evidenced by his work with Sixth Baptist Church in Richmond, VA where he served on the Ushers' Ministry and Men's Bible Class, Shiloh Pentecostal Church in Jacksonville, NC where he served in various roles, and his membership in the Deacon Ministry at New Beginnings Full Gospel Church in Decatur, GA where he also served as a Life Member Chaplain for Disabled Veterans Affairs, and was always there for those in need. Nat loved the Lord and will be sincerely missed by those who knew him.
Just a few weeks shy of his 88th birthday, Nat received his wings after a brief illness on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Regional Memorial Hospital in Mechanicsville, VA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel, Sr. and Hattie, as well as four siblings; Alfonzo Reddick, Martha Reddick, Elizabeth Reddick McTizic, and Hazel Skipwith. He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Vivian Wallace of Robersonville, NC, Saundra Napier (Jerome) of Richmond, VA, and Doretha Reddick of Richmond, VA; three sons Terry Reddick (Tanya) of Richmond, VA, Clifton Reddick (Diane) of Richmond, VA, and Nathaniel Reddick, III (Sue) of Lincoln, CA; two sisters Louise Waller of NJ and Mary Hervey of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, Charlie Reddick (Judy) of Williamston, NC, Thurman Reddick (Brenda) of Williamston, NC; 20 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, members and clergy from his church families, and friends.
