Lurry "Snoots"
December 2, 1938 – October 24, 2020
Mr. Percell Custis Lurry, affectionately called "Snoots," departed this life 10:24 P.M., Saturday night, October 24, 2020. He was surrounded by his family at the time of death, as he had been for the last nine months of his life. He died in the home of his devoted niece, Vera L. Harris, devoted great niece, Brittany Lurry, and a devoted family friend, Robert Upshaw. Vera, Brittany, and Robert had been providing personal care for Percell since February, 2020. His devoted niece, Elisa Lurry, would assist the family with Percell's personal care on the weekends.
Purcell was born in Aylett, Virginia, on December 2, 1938. He was the youngest son of the union of the late Clarence W. and Mary Foster Lurry. Percell was proceeded in death by his oldest sister, Mary L. Page, his brothers, Robert Lurry, Lonnie A. Lurry, Sr., Clyde W. Lurry, and his wife, Frances Walker Lurry.
At an early age, Percell was baptized at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in King William, Virginia and was a life long member. He sang with the adult choir of the church. He graduated from Hamilton Holmes High School in June of 1958. Like his father who built the family home which stands to this day on Route 600, Percell enjoyed residential painting and carpentry. He worked as a licensed painting contractor for many years and also performed residential repairs.
Percell leaves to cherish his memory, three devoted brothers, James William Lurry, Clarence Restee Lurry, John Lewis Lurry and wife, Queen Lurry. One devoted sister Margaret Lurry Aaron and husband, Paul R. Aaron. Four devoted nieces, Vera Lurry Harris and her partner, Robert Upshaw, Attorney Brenda L. Page and her partner, Edward A. Williams, Elisa L. Lurry, and Attorney Carolyn Lurry Mapp and her husband, David Mapp. Five devoted nephews Ricardo W. Frye and his wife, Lavenia Frye, James W. Lurry, Jr. and his wife Mekeba Lurry, John L. Lurry, Jr. and his wife Jennel Lurry, Lonnie A. Lurry, Jr., and Michael Lurry, eleven great nieces and four great nephews and a host of relatives and friends. The family also thanks Renee Johnson for the care she provided Percell in his final months of life.
Mr. Lurry's remains rest at Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, Washington Hwy. (U.S. 1 N.), Ashland, VA. Percell will lie in state for Viewing at H. W. Dabney Funeral Home on Thursday, November 5, 2020, from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Grave side services will take place at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in King William, Virginia, on Friday, November 6, 2020 at 1:00 PM. Rev. Wilbert D. Talley will officiate. Interment at Mount Sinai Baptist Church.
The family asks that all relatives and friends wear their face masks and practice social distancing at all times during the viewing and grave side services.
