Obituary

Richard Franklin Harris, Jr.
February 11, 1953 – March 29, 2026

Richard Franklin Harris, Jr., was born on Wednesday, February 11, 1953, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Richard Franklin Harris, Sr., and the late Mary Frances Thompson Harris. He peacefully departed this life surrounded by his family at August Healthcare of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

At an early age, Richard accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and became a member of Abner Baptist Church in Glen Allen, Virginia. He was raised in Rockville, Virginia, where he spent most of his life and built strong roots within his community.

Richard was educated in the Hanover County Public School system and dedicated over 30 years of service as a custodian with Henrico County Public Schools. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and steady presence. In addition to his full-time career, he operated a part-time janitorial service for many years, reflecting his commitment to providing for his family and serving others.

A man of many gifts, Richard shared his deep love for music as a talented drummer. He performed with The Greedy Gang Rhythm and Blues Band and several gospel groups in the Richmond area, including The Golden Jubilees, The Rock of Ages, The Anointed Ones, The Traveleers Gospel Singers, and the New Traveleers.

Richard lived a life grounded in faith, kindness, and genuine connection. He never met a stranger--only friends he had yet to meet—and was known for his warm spirit and easygoing yet strong-willed nature. He will be lovingly remembered as a car enthusiast, a skilled handyman, a master of the grill, and a passionate gospel drummer.

He found joy in both freshwater and saltwater fishing, drag racing, and working on his own vehicles—always willing to lend a helping hand to others with theirs. He also enjoyed simple pleasures such as tossing horseshoes in the backyard, engaging in arts and crafts, actively participating in Bible study, and unwinding with the daily news, classic sitcoms, old westerns, action dramas, comedy and his favorite music. Above all, he treasured time spent with family and friends. A true lover of animals, Richard shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Spike, and his cherished cats, Boots and Sammy, with whom he is now reunited.

Richard leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife, Edith Harris; his devoted daughters, Orlanda Harris and Chena Farmer; his former wife, the mother of his children and lifelong friend, Dallas Harris; and his three beloved grandchildren, Jaylen Farmer, Tennille Farmer, and Gabrielle Hill. He also leaves a host of loving extended family members and dear friends who will continue to celebrate his life and legacy.

The family gratefully acknowledges Abner Baptist Church and the many family members and friends who visited, spoke with him by phone, and thoughtfully sent gifts, care packages, and cards over the years. Your kindness and love brought comfort and joy.

The family also extends heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to Angela, Candace, Benita, Alex, Maria, Kylene, Sibone, Theresa, and the entire August Healthcare of Richmond team. Your compassion, companionship, and exceptional care meant more than words can express. You consistently went above and beyond, and your kindness will never be forgotten.

Well done, good and faithful servant. You have fought a good fight, finished your course, and kept the faith—your race is complete. Through a life marked by hard work, steady hands, a giving heart, and a deep love for family, music, and fellowship, you poured into others and lived with quiet purpose. Now rest in eternal peace—your labor fulfilled, your joy made whole, and your legacy forever living in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.
