Robert Lewis
Tarrer, Jr.
November 17, 1957 – October 24, 2025
Robert Lewis Tarrer, Jr., affectionately known to his family as "Brother" or "Brown," peacefully entered eternal rest on October 24, 2025, at Autumn Care of Mechanicsville, Virginia. He was born on November 17, 1957, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Robert L. Tarrer, Sr. and Edith Braxton Tarrer.
Robert found Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church in Ashland, Virginia, where he served with dedication on the Usher Board. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and willingness to serve made him a beloved presence among his church family.
During his youth, Robert attended Hanover County Public Schools and the Richmond Technical Center, where he began developing a love for craftsmanship and hands-on work. He was also an active athlete who enjoyed playing football and softball and was a proud member of the Hanover Upsetters of 1977. A loyal fan of the Washington Commanders, Robert's enthusiasm for the team was unmatched, especially when they lost, as he was known to go into a good-natured frenzy that always brought laughter to his loved ones.
In his leisure time, Robert enjoyed watching game shows, westerns, and horse racing. He rarely missed the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, or Preakness Stakes. His fascination with horses began early in life and blossomed into a lifelong passion. This love led him to a successful career as a Trainer and Groomsman of thoroughbred horses. Throughout his career, he worked at Colonial Downs, Pimlico, Billy Lamb's Farm, Meadow Farms, Eagle Point Farm, and Greenwood Stables, among others. His connection with horses brought him peace, comfort, and joy - they were truly his therapy and sanctuary.
Alongside his love for horses, Robert pursued another craft with excellence, concrete finishing. He worked faithfully as a self-employed Concrete Finisher along with his late father, Robert Tarrer, Sr., and lifelong friend Charles "Buncie" Winston, Jr. for many years. Robert took great pride in his work, finding satisfaction in a freshly poured foundation or a perfectly smoothed patio, sidewalk, or driveway. Each finished project was a reflection of his dedication and skill.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Tarrer, Sr., and Edith Braxton Tarrer. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving daughters, Demetra Tarrer and Stephanie Tarrer; the devoted mother of his children, Hattie Tarrer; and his bonus son, Ralph Livingston. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Aniyah Baytops, Dylan Baytops, Ahmaad Tarrer, Amir Tarrer, and Jordyn Tarrer.
He is also survived by his caring sisters, Mona Jones, Janice Tarrer (Vernon), and Dorine Tillman (Larry); nieces, Dawn C. Floyd (Christopher), Latoya M. Jones, and Kira Tolliver; nephews, Dominique Jones, Rondelle Jones (Sharnita), Vernon Puryear, Jr., and Damien Tarrer (Jennifer); and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended relatives. Robert will also be fondly remembered by his dear friends Mark Cash, Henry Patterson, James Toliver, and Bernice Wingfield.
The family extends a special thank you to his devoted caregivers, Deacon Larry W. and Dorine Tillman, Accent Care Home Health, and Legacy Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and dedicated care during his final days. Though his earthly journey has ended, Robert's love, laughter, and gentle spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
