Obituary

On February 10, 1935, in Hanover County, Fleming Morris, Sr. and Blanche Winston Morris welcomed Sarah, the oldest of 7 beautiful children into the world. Under the guidance of her parents and church leaders, she accepted Christ at an early age. Brown Grove Baptist Church has always been her home. She also started her first years of education in Hanover, VA. She later went on to graduate from John M. Gandy High School in 1953. Throughout her life, she has always gone out of her way to help others.

Sarah was a beautiful woman with a heart of gold.

She married Elworth M. Winston, Sr. in 1960 and began her life as a military spouse. She traveled the world with Sargent First Class Winston who became a war veteran and an American Hero. After they retired from their military careers, they began a family.

Sarah and Elworth Sr. together raised 3 children who they loved dearly. Elworth Jr., Kenny, and Sarah. She took a few years off to raise her kids. She returned to work some years later to help her husband complete their dream.

In the summer of 1981, their dream became a reality as they were blessed to build a new home on 9 acres in Ashland, VA. She was a master gardener from the start, she loved all types of gardening. She was a part of the missionaries and loved to play the organ at church. Sarah worked many government jobs in and out of the country and retired from Defense General Supply Center on Jefferson Davis Highway in 1991 to take care of her husband until his death in 1993. She still spread love after his passing. She raised her grandson Michael Winston, did Hospice work, and worked for the Ashland Food Bank.

It is with abiding peace of mind and blessed assurance that her spirit transitioned over to God to find perfect rest on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Sarah is preceded in death by her husband Elworth M. Winston, Sr.; parents Fleming Morris, Sr. and Blanche Olivia Winston Morris; and brother John Morris, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memories, her children Elworth M. Winston, Jr. (Kisha), Kenny Winston (Wanda) and Sarah Winston (Lolo); her siblings Fleming Morris, Jr., Blanche Morris Champion (James), Rev. Robert Morris (Elsie), Thomas Morris (Emily), and devoted sister Sheronda Morris Smith (Leon); grandchildren Taylor Winston, Michael Winston, and Victoria Winston; two great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Sonny Young; sister-in-law, Mae Winston; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
