Stevenson J.
Fox, Sr.
May 27, 1949 – July 29, 2025
Stevenson Jerome Fox, Sr., "Herc," was born at home on his grandparent's farm in Hanover County on May 27, 1949. He was the fourth son of eleven children born in a humble Christian family to the late Deacon Philip Fox and the late Deaconess Margaret James Fox. It was there that he learned the joy of storytelling from his granddaddy, the value of work, how to farm, the importance of carrying out your responsibilities, and more importantly the love and unity of being a family.
He attended Georgetown Elementary School, Eastend Middle School, and John M. Gandy High School. He chose to drop out of high school so he could help his parents provide for their family and help his siblings attend schools of higher learning. Jobs for young Black men in the early 1960s were not easy to get. But God favored him to constantly be employed. His career was spent in the boxing manufacturing industry – first at Albermarle Container which became Horner Waldorf, and then at Boxes to Size and Pratt Industries. He worked for over 40 years doing what he loved and excelled in until he was diagnosed with cancer.
Stevenson always believed in God. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Greater Nazarene Baptist Church in Hanover County. There he sang in the choir and served with the Usher Ministry. He was also instrumental in helping to build a part of the church. In May of 2025, while he was still in St. Mary's Hospital, he testified that God told him to join Woodville Presbyterian Church, he gave his confession of faith, and he was welcomed into this fellowship of believers. Stevenson loved Woodville, and he especially enjoyed fellowship with the Men's Ministry, participating in Bible Study where the class called him "Bishop Fox," and being in every Zoom worship service.
In Steve's younger years he developed a love for sports, but especially for baseball. He and some of his brothers were active members of their Georgetown Community Baseball Team where he was the pitcher and played in the outfield.
Stevenson was given the nickname, "Herc," because he was strong like the Greek and Roman mythical figure, Hercules, who was renowned for his strength, endurance, and heroic deeds. Not only was he physically strong, but he was strong in his love for his family and friends, and strong in high ethical character.
In the spring of 1969, Stevenson met the love of his life, Peggy Eloise Raymond, at a parental monitored house party held in the home of his dear friend. They dated for 8 years, were married on May 6, 1978, and from their union, one son was born, Stevenson Jerome Fox, Jr. "Herc" was a good father who provided for his family and who loved them with his whole heart.
When Stevenson Jr., "SteJ," was of age, "Herc" discovered that baseball was being offered to young children through Battery Park Recreational Center. His first time at the center began a long relationship and friendship with the coaches, the staff, and with him becoming a proud coach for the Battery Park Vikings baseball team, football team, and the basketball team. Not only did he coach at Battery Park, but he coached the girls' softball team and assisted with the boy's baseball team at John Marshall High School where he always made sure the fields were well manicured and lined. He also created a softball team for Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.
"Coach Fox" will always be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, and brother who loved with his whole heart, and as a self-less friend and mentor. His ability to listen, empathize, motivate, assist, and care for other people without judgment was evident to all who came in contact with him.
Early in the morning on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, God called His name to be from labor to rest and reward in Him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Philip Fox and Deaconess Margaret James Fox; his brother, Welford Fox; and His sister, Darshell Fox Miller. He leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Rev. Peggy E. Fox; one devoted son, Stevenson J. Fox, Jr.; five grandchildren: Delaney Grove, Quincey Taylor, Samari Fox, Taylor Daniels, and Stevenson J. Fox, III; one great-grandson, Jelani Taylor; nine siblings: Philip Fox (Patty), Kermit Fox (Dorothy), Lewis Fox, Reavie Fox Harvie (Donald), Linda Fox Brown (Johnnie), Gale King (Wayne), Donald Fox (Rose), and Marvin Fox (Velma); and a host of other relatives and friends.
