Obituary

Thelma Hill Jackson, the daughter of the late Henderson R. and Flossie D. Hill, was born in Cleveland County, North Carolina on July 13, 1921. She answered the call of the Lord to journey to her heavenly home on September 12, 2015. She was converted at the early age of 8, and joined Mt. Vernon Baptist Church (High Point, North Carolina) where she served as a secretary of the Sunday school as well as a member of the Junior Ushers, and sang in the Junior Choir. Thelma graduated from William Penn High School in North Carolina, and later moved to Washington, D.C. in 1942. She joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and served as a member of the Senior Choir, Church School Baptist Training Union, First Aid Church Nursing Unit, and as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader. In 1957 she married the love of her life, the late Deacon Harry C. Jackson. Throughout her life, Thelma loved working with young people, and had the opportunity to impact many young lives as an Institutional Counselor for 25 years with the Department of Human Resources in Washington, D.C. Thelma's heart was full of compassion for others especially children and youth. She enjoyed being around them and always found time to interact with, encourage and support them in their endeavors. In 1976 she relocated to Richmond, Virginia and joined Moore Street Baptist Church. In 1978 she moved to King William County, Virginia and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church where she served in various capacities including: the Deaconess Ministry, Mass and Senior Choir, Senior Missionary Ministry, Food and Program Committee, Youth Ministry, Youth Choir Sponsor, Women's Ministry, and "Mother of the Church." Thelma was actively involved with the Upper King William Senior Center and served on the executive board. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 9501, and a member of the Eastern Star #10 PHA, Washington, D.C. Without a doubt, Thelma was rooted and grounded in the Lord with an unshakeable faith, and she lived life to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry C. Jackson, step-son Harry T. Jackson, and son Anthony C. Jackson; survived by step-son, Clifford Jackson (Christine) of Maryland; daughter and caregiver, Theresa Jackson (King William County, Virginia); grandson, Antoine Jackson and his mother Regina Parson (Henrico, Virginia); three sisters: Bernice Gladden, Grace McQuaig, and Julia Miller (all of Washington, D.C.); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; a special lifetime friend, Gladys Raper; and many other treasured friends. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7
