Wanda Smith
Woods
September 22, 1955 – January 17, 2024
Wanda Renita Woods (Smith), affectionately known as "WAWA", passed away peacefully at her new home on January 17, 2024, after a decline in her health. She was born on September 22, 1955, in Washington, DC at Freedmen's Hospital. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Kameron Smith.
Wanda was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She cherished her family and was a proud family historian. She knew everything about her relatives and how they were connected. She kept in touch with them and organized family reunions on both sides of her family. She instilled in everyone the value of family and togetherness.
Wanda was a faithful and active member of Mt Zion Baptist Church in Arlington, VA, where she served under the leadership of the late Rev. Leonard Smith, who was also a dear friend. After retiring and moving to Ruther Glen, she continued to attend services online and support the church financially until her passing.
Wanda had a long and successful career at the Department of Defense, where she started working as a high school student and retired after more than 35 years of service. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Fairfax County, after attending Langston Elementary, Stratford Middle, and Washington Lee High School in Arlington, VA.
Wanda was a talented and creative crafter. She made beautiful, crocheted blankets for each of her grandchildren. She also loved music and was a big fan of Frankie Beverly, whom she jokingly called her "baby daddy". Wanda was known for her honesty and authenticity. She always spoke her mind and shared her opinions with anyone who would listen.
Wanda was a generous, lively, and radiant person. She welcomed everyone with a warm heart, a hug, and a smile. She had a passion for her family, spirituality, crafting, and music. She was adventurous and determined, often surpassing the expectations of what a 68-year-old could do. She wanted everyone to succeed and thrive, and she often gave words of encouragement and wisdom to her loved ones.
She leaves behind a rich legacy of love and memories for her parents, Jerome and Margaret Smith, her children Crystal Moore and Jerry Smith, her grandchildren Jaron Moore, Minister Jamal Moore, Jazmen Moore, Jaxon Edgerton, Kaalyn and Kaliyah Brinkley and her great-grandchild, Karter Moore. She is also survived by her siblings, Deborah (Ronald) Samuel of Ruther Glen, Dale Smith of Arlington, VA, Vincent Smith of PG County, MD, and Karen Smith of Ruther Glen, as well as a large network of over 20 aunts and uncles, 50 first cousins, 8 nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends, including her long-time friend, Linton Mack.
Wanda was formerly married to Cary Woods. In this union, she embraced her bonus daughter, Maurice "Neicy" Woods, along with two bonus granddaughters, Arissa Colbert-Smith and Chicara McCullough, and two bonus great grandchildren, Kaleb Smith and Kyrin Jackson. Her love and warmth extended gracefully to her extended family.
Her departure leaves a deep wound in our hearts, and she will be greatly missed by her entire family and countless friends who loved her dearly in her wide network of community. We will cherish her precious memories forever and honor her legacy of love and faith
