Swing low, sweet chariot.
Coming for to carry me home .
Wilbert Oliver Fields , affectionately known to family and friends as "Buck", heard the call of The Almighty to come home on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Henrico Doctors Hospital at the blessed age of 83.
Buck was one of 11 children born November 11, 1933 to the late Reverend Wortham and Bertha Fields of Caroline County, Virginia where he was raised. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Eunice, Malcolm, Lloyd, Hobert, Ruby, John, Evelyn, and Elizabeth, and former wife Earlean Robinson Fields.
He received his education in the Caroline County Public School System. He also enjoyed playing Center Field in his younger years with the Caroline Slide and the Hanover Dodgers baseball teams. Wilbert was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and farming.
He was employed by Guy Smith Hardware, Basic Construction Company as a foreman, and operated commercial vehicles for F.M. Barlow and Mid-Atlantic Trucking Companies. As Buck gained knowledge and experience, his desire to be his own boss grew. He became self-employed and eventually built homes for members of the community and his family. He had a gift and love for working with his hands and took pride in his profession.
Wilbert O. Fields accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, was baptized and joined the Mount Tabor Baptist Church at an early age. He served faithfully on the Trustee Ministry Board for 30 years. He also served as an usher in God's house and welcomed all who entered with a smile. In 1990, Trustee Fields joined the Male Chorus. He enjoyed singing praises unto God. One of his favorite songs was "There Will Be Rest For Me I Know".
He leaves cherished memories to his loving and devoted wife of 22 years, Roseella (Rose) King Fields, two sons, Jerome O. Fields (Diahann) of King William, VA., and Wilbert A. Fields (Angela) of Louisa, VA., two daughters, Carmellia F. Washington and Martrinia T. Dudley (Michael) both of Ashland, VA. Eight grandchildren, Three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wortham H. Fields, Jr., and Thomas M. Fields (Irene) both of Caroline County, VA., a sister-in-law, Aretha H. Fields, first wife Thelma Anderson and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 5:1
